That's a good point but it still means you have to wear expensive and uncomfortable clothes. And while it does work on stupid people, if you come across someone who can think for himself, like me, I will think less of you for wearing those fancy clothes. If you wore fancy clothes specifically for me to see them, I will be insulted because you think I'm one of the stupid people. >_>
Inazuma, you should allow the possibility that some people actually find suits comfortable (I won't comment on ties as that one I can not understand). It is not that hard to imagine considering some of them are *tailored* to fit the person.
About the social aspects of it, indeed it is a pity some people automatically think more of someone if they "dress smart" (I don't even like the expression), and indeed some genuinely smart people intentionally use that psychological flaw of that population (which I believe is the majority, and I think there are studies that back that up but I'm not looking for them

). For example, most con artists present themselves "dressed smart" and all smooth talking and get people to fall for their scams.
You shouldn't take it personal when someone tries that trick on you. It reflects bad on them and on the people that fall for it, not on you. Personally I can even find it somewhat funny. I still remember the smirk I couldn't contain when a salesman tried to pull the "your neighbour has one" trick on me!
General_Norris: LOTS of people think less of difference. It is a sad reality but it is a reality. Dressing differently is just the tip of the iceberg. I find it extremely hard to believe you haven't met people like that, maybe you just haven't noticed.
