If the country you live in isn't 100~110v, it's good to use one.

oh so u.s. and japan use same voltage? but just out of curiosity what if they didnt, would the wall outlet explode or something

I rember reading in another forum someone's friend had pluged their white saturn in without a step down converter (here in the uk we have 230v) and smoke came out of it.

Not quite...
Japan: 100~110v
US: 110~120v

The voltage isn't that different but in theory it could damage your system. If you care for your stuff, get a converter. ;)
