There's a little cover on the top front of the N64. Under this cover is either a jumper (doesn't do anything but complete some circuits) or an expansion pack which adds more memory to the system. The expansion packs typically, Nintendo brand or 3rd party, have a bright orange top to them which you'll easily see under the little cover in front.

The expansion pack isn't really required for that many games, but it can help enhance a few and a few of the all around best games such as Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask do require it.
