The Big Bang 2011 event scheduled to take place in Ottumwa, IA August 4-7 has been postponed.

The International Video Game Hall of Fame board voted Monday night to postpone the event, according to sources and confirmed to Arcade Game Examiner by IVGHOF Board President Liz Bolinger.

The 2010 Big Bang drew thousands of attendees from across North America. In addition to live tournaments held by Twin Galaxies and other organizations and a Pac-Man "Birthday Room" set up by Star Worlds Arcade, the Big Bang featured Hall of Fame inductions of gaming names such as Nolan Bushnell, Shigeru Miyamoto, Masaya Nakamura, Steve Wiebe, Johnathan 'Fatal1ty' Wendel and Billy Mitchell.

Despite positive reviews of the event and high attendance numbers, the 2010 Big Bang event brought in two-thirds of the overall cost of the event, leaving some outstanding debt. Under pressure from city leaders and some of the creditors, the next Big Bang event will now take place six months after the outstanding debt has been resolved.

Fundraising event GameDay 2011 is still scheduled as planned for Memorial Day weekend. A multi-city event, the GameDay website will feature live streaming broadcasts from homes and arcades and locations across North America in an effort to raise funds to help the International Video Game Hall of Fame. The event, which is currently scheduled to feature almost 30 gamers, was the concept of supporters of the IVGHOF's efforts and being run by them as well. Terrible news. It hasn't officially been announced by the board, but it looks all too likely to be true. Looks like the meetup is going to be cancelled if it is.

That's a shame. Not entirely surprising though. Hard to make a profit through tourism in small town Iowa. Hopefully they can raise some funds and we can do something in 2012.

25,000 people isn't all that small. It's certainly in a rural area, but it's the largest Iowan city south of Iowa City.
