Nintendo is my first choice just for their "official" development and production.
Sega was definitely ahead of it's time for many reasons. One, the software creativity along with console processing. Each system Sega released I recognized as a quality effort as far
as marketing is concerned. I can remember as a kid, quote me on this:
"Somehow although amazingly fast, racing to collect rings as sonic(sega) was no where near as entertaining as hitting yoshi(snes) in the back of the head to swallow a coin."
Nintendo always does their homework, Atari was my first "console system" so now that their out of the hardware business Nintendo to me, is the grandfather to Sony and Microsoft. Look at Kinect and Move. Eerie how similar they are to the Wii. Respect your elders!
