Side Scrolling RPGs?

Post by darthmunky »

Are there ANY side scrolling RPGs? (That are not Castlevania SOTN)? Basically sidescrollers where you have skills and level up and get new weapons and stuff.

I feel confident that there's already a thread about this on here, but if you have a Wii, look no further than Muramasa: The Demon Blade.

Popful Mail is a side scroller. You could consider Odin Sphere and Muramasa as well.

The Battle of Olympus and Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link both for the NES. Both great games, and if any Zelda game is an RPG, Zelda 2 is. Quite different than your average Zelda game.

Wonder Boy III: The dragons trap (master system) and Wonder Boy in Monster World (Mega Drive/Genesis) are both great. They're half ARPG and half platformer, and all fantastic.

That makes me want to bring up the Super Adventure Island games on the SNES, great stuff.

I'm looking more for the kind that don't have levels, open world kind of.

I think a lot of what we've mentioned so far fits that bill... lol.

The wonder boy games are verging on being a metroidvania. Thats why I didn;t mention wonder boy II, which is level based.

Vanillaware's games (Odin Sphere, Muramasa) and Falcom's side scrollers (Popful Mail, Xanadu games, some Ys games, Sorcerian) are exactly what you're looking for.
