If you want JRPGs in particular, you've got slim pickins on the PC.

Take Mr Popo's advice and get Recettear. That game is great. I highly recommend it as well.

Final Fantasy VII, VIII, and XI were all on PC (We pretend XIV never happened).

You might also want to try Septerra Core, which was not made in Japan, but tries to be like a Final Fantasy game. It can be found on gog.com for cheap.

Also, there are some freeware JRPG games such as The Last Scenario or The Spirit Engine 2

And if you have a taste for the absurd and have a strange sense of humor, then I highly recommend Tales of Game's Studios Presents Chef Boyardee's Barkley, Shut Up & Jam: Gaiden, Chapter 1 of the Hoopz Barkley SaGa

Try Knights of Xentar. Yeah, it's an eroge, but it's not a bad RPG either. Keeps pretty close to the JRPG formula.

But yes, you are missing out big time if you stick to JRPGs on the PC. You might try some of the early western RPGs that inspired JRPGs, eg Ultima IV.

Haha, I had this game back in the day, could only play it when no one was around.

If not PC, then what would you guys suggest for a JRPG console in this day and age? I would suggest PSP (Y's series, Legend of Heroes, Persona, Disgaea, plus all the classic PSX JRpgs are available as well).
If you aren't having a good time, why are you playing?

I'd say DS is the best current JRPG platform.

The best versions of the Ys games are in Japanese. I'm not really big on Japanese RPGs on the PC, but there are a LOT. The PC is a great system for RPGs in Japanese.

How is your kanji?

Anachronox was reputed to be JRPG-ish, but I haven't played enough of it to personally confirm or deny that.

There are two high quality remakes of Sorcerian for PC too.

It's not a JRPG - But Darklands is really fun, and I think it's freeware now. Huge amount of character customization, and completely non-linear game on a huge map. Active battle system, and historically it's pretty legitimate. Make sure to get the latest patch though, as it has a lot of bugs if left unpatched. (You'll need Dosbox to run it if you're running XP+)
