If you miss arcades, this movie is for you

Found this on my favorite blog for all things pop culture:

It looks decent.

One thing I find interesting is that there is no talk of the seedy characters that hung out at the arcade, most of them were basically drug fronts, beat a drug dealer or be rude to a drug dealer (ie, beating them both rounds at SFIII, not letting them have the second) usually some scummbag would come over and tell you to leave.

My Uncle (who worked at our local arcade) hated me being there when I was growing up, because of how scummy they were.

Can't say I've ever experienced such a thing either.

Every arcade had your typical punks of course, and maybe a creepy guy or two who's a bit too friendly, but I've never seen anything like what you described.

I'm not saying I don't believe it, its just new to me.

Nah I have heard heaps of stories (from different members form different countries) of similar situations.

I am talking about those dedicated arcade, not a row of arcade machines at a pizza hut.

its a bummer to see these arcades shutting down or even turning in to ticket redemption places for little kids. I think there are still a few true arcades left but the numbers seem to drop every year.

I'm thankful for places like Ground Kontrol in Portland, OR that revive that old school arcade with a whole floor of pin ball machines and all of the vintage machines like donkey kong, punch out and even hard to find titles like discs of tron.

One day I hope there will be some sort of revival of the classic arcade but I guess we'll have to make due with those few hidden gems that are still holding on.

I'm not sure I miss arcades(was never really one for getting out much), rather than the arcade style of gaming.

Used to be a huge deal to get a console port of an arcade game back in the late 70's-early 90's. I can recall getting Metal Slug 3 on the original X-Box and looking around for reviews and suddenly it was like "ew...arcade game."

Still, even as something of an anti-social, I'd rather see arcades re-emerge as the premier social gathering for gamers, rather than all this online BS, which serves to further ground us in our own homes...

on the flip, I used to love going to arcades with my friends in like Jr. High years. But as I've grown older, I have no gamer friends in real life. I've been to a couple of arcades in the past few years, but like I said -- none of my gamer friends live near me, so it's not a social thing. But now online gaming has made the social experience (kind of) return for me. I can play against my friends like dsheinem (PA), Flake (TX) and sevin0seven (CA), etc. -- and we can discuss the games we're playing, talk about which games to buy next, etc. For those of us without a local circle of gamer friends, this is the closest we have to re-living the arcade days.
