Generic Component Cable for PS3/PS2

Post by Lodestar »

Is it any good? How does it compare to the Sony one? Any discernible difference(s) in quality? I ask because I don't want to spend 15-20 USD on a Sony-branded cable if it's mostly the same.

Never, ever, ever, ever, pay for a "premium" brand cable. There is no difference between the sony brand and a generic or monoprice.com brand. I only have generic cables hooked upto my whole entertainment system. including my monoprice wii, ps3 cables.

Gamestop sells one used, they also have a new cable that supports multiple systems. I would not buy the octopus multiple system cable though.

Only eight bucks, no shipping charge!

I know the myth about HDMI "premium" cables because that's just a digital signal and it either works or it doesn't, but since component is analog, there could be degradation in the video quality.

I use a monoprice.com component cable for my PS2 and it's amazing. Don't waste you're money on anything expensive. My cable was $6.00.

What does one have to do within the PS2 settings if you go with component?

I have a S-video setup right now but component is a no-brainer (haven't put thought into it prior).

Anyone have a generic favorite that's worked ok? There are ones on amazon for next to nothing.

I had bought one from Best Buy (yeah I know) years ago that was around $4. The metal on the plugs was pretty thin so an accidental yank on the cable could be bad, but since I wasn't messing with the birds nest behind the TV it was fine. I upgraded to a Monster one that I got super cheap. So the cheap one you see will probably be fine if you aren't unplugging things all the time and you don't have a pet that might be disturbing cords all the time.

There's not really much (if any) of a noticeable drop in signal quality between 'generic' and 'official' cables. Really, I wouldn't worry about cable fidelity much unless you're like, running a lot of cables a long distance.

Be sure the PS2 Configuration is set to Component not RGB.

All PS2 games work in component. However, only certain ones can be set to 480p, there are two that even go up to 720p and 1080i. Trick is to know how.
