The myth of software PS2 emulation on PS3

Post by noiseredux »

inspired by something DSH said recently in another thread...

I started wondering if PS2 emulation via software only is really all that impossible. Is it? I mean, I really don't know. But then I thought about MvC2, which was released on PSN. Is that game (A) merely an emulation of the PS2 game, or is it (B) built from the ground up as a new game? If it's (A) then shouldn't that prove that PS2 emulation isn't REALLY out of the question?

Also, I remember reading back in like 2009 or so that Sony basically said that they'd like to bring back PS2 support on PS3, but it's just not a priority. I remember that they basically hinted that if homebrewers built a working PS2 emulator and offered it to Sony they'd probably want it. (Source not cited)

Anyway. Go!

Marvel vs Capcom 2 was originally developed on Naomi hardware, which was the basis for the Dreamcast.

It's not an emulated version at all. The ps2 version is actually a somewhat crummy port.

I thought I read a lot of stuff about this awhile back how it's both software/hardware related, like the original PS3's had separate lens to run the PS2 games or something. But I could be totally wrong.

To be honest I think Sony just cut it off because they don't care (and to save money) and the PS2 is still supported with new games off and on and probably still sells well. I doubt they wanted that to end. That said, I'd love nothing more than my slim PS3 to support PS2 games officially someday. With virtual memory cards, HDMI, etc, it'd be great.

the originals had actual PS2 hardware in them. They cut this out in the revisions to... save money! But the question is really if it is possible to emulate using only software since there's no PS2 hardware in them anymore.

I was able to get a launch 60GB model. It's awesome. I like how it supports pretty much every single PS1 and PS2 game, instead of just whatever random games were popular enough to get support like with the 360.

To answer your question though, European PS3s originally launched with software emulation only. It's my understanding that the software emulation present in the launch European PS3s is significantly worse than the hardware emulation present in launch US and JPN ones, though. But yeah, it's definitely possible.

When they announced the newer models wouldn't be backwards compatible I thought they were trying to sell more PS2s, considering you can still walk into pretty much any retail store and buy one even today...

Needless to say, I still have my PS2 - and if it crapped out on me, I guess I'd buy another one (not necessarily new though) because I have the stupid kinda sorta BC PS3.

I'd really like it if they could come up with some way to emulate PS2 though! Although that most likely won't happen, at the rate things are going D:

Haha, don't even get me started (like we've been talking about the Otogi titles). I think literally half of my tiny Xbox collection is not compatible on the 360... Mace Griffin Bounty Hunter (I liked it lol), Serious Sams 2, Invisible War, etc, and plenty of other games I've wanted to buy. Pretty annoying how random it is.

I just had a conversation about this with a friend of mine that does console repair. I was asking him if it would be possible to find a broken ps3 and put the bc components in my 40 gig. My friend wasn't sure. Anyone have any thoughts on if that would be possible?

Supposedly there was a recent Playstation patent that seems to be a plug device for ps3. It looked like a small power brink adapter. It would be terrible to re-release PS2 games on PSN because your more likely to own physical disc as to digital.
