Organize by year/generation or by system manufacturer?
Organize by year/generation or by system manufacturer?
This is a silly question, but I'm curious how everyone organizes their game collection on their shelves. Do you sort them by generation (all 16 bit together, all 32 bit together, etc) or do you sort them by system manufacturer (all Sega games together, all Sony games together, etc)? Do you have another crazy sorting system?

I organize by how it fits on my shelves/Tv stands. Right now my Nes games are next to my Ps1 games. I don't really mind how they're organized, just as long as they're grouped by system, and then in alphabetical order.

I sort alphabetically by system. The only exception are special editions/cases that otherwise don't fit the norm. I usually put those in a separate space.

Shelf 1: MasterSystem/Mega Drive (mostly boxed)
Shelf 2: Playstation 1, Saturn, Dreamcast, CDi, 3DO and Turbografx (all jewel cases except saturn, which lays horizontally because I ran out of shelves)
Shelf 3: Wii (stacked horizontally because i ran out of space on the shelfto have them vertically)
Shelf 4: Gamecube
Shelf 5: DS (horizontally stacked like the wii for the same reasons
Shelf 6: SNES, NES, Game Boy, Virtual boy, GBA, GBC (all loose cartridges).
I have 2 other shelves on my gaming bookcase too, but one holds my cdi and 3do which are too big to fit in my console cupboard, along with my Donkey konga controllers, and the other has game guides, the few cardboard boxes I own and some other loose peripherals and things on it.
I'm running out of space tbh, I need to expand. Some shelves have a lot more consoles on them because i own less games for them - I only have 3 PS1 games and 2 TG16 titles.
Anyhow, my setup generally just groups systems by the size of the game boxes, so I could adjust the spacing of the shelves accordingly. Hence all the jewel case games on one shelf. The consoles are grouped together individually and organised in alphabetical order, even if they share shelves with rival systems games. The only exception would be my loose mega drive games, which are alphabetically sorted and then placed next to the boxed ones, so they line up nicer.
The saturn game boxes are so tall though that they didn't fit on any shelf standing vertically, I'm gonna have to adjust sometime. That said, with the god-awful saturn cases we have here, it might be better to have them laid flat, so the discs dont fall off the spindle and the cases dont fall open as easily, which often happens. Worst case design ever.

chronologically by year the system came out, then alphabetically within each system. There are exceptions due to fitting everything. I have four bookshelves to cover consoles, then a mini-bookshelf to cover handhelds. Check my family album post.

Same here. Where ever I can fit them is where they go, so long as systems are grouped and alphabetized.SwooshBear wrote:I don't really mind how they're organized, just as long as they're grouped by system, and then in alphabetical order.

I organize my games alphabetically...by the middle name of the lead tester.
No, not really.
By system and then by series with favorites on top. Although things usually get jumbled.

Re: Organize by year/generation or by system manufacturer?
I'm still putting up the last of the shelves, but I've the remaining games preorganized. I've got them organized first by DS cases vs. DVD cases/UGCs (lets me put the top shelf close to the ceiling), then by system manufactuerer, and then chronologically by system within each of those, and alphabetically per system. So it goes GB, VB, GBC, GBA, DS, 3DS, GG, SNES, N64, GC, Wii, Gen, Sega CD, 32X, Sat, DC, PS, PS2, PS3, PSP, Xbox, 360, PC. My NES and SMS stuff is in my bedroom since that's where I've got my CRT.

Re: Organize by year/generation or by system manufacturer?
I generally sort alphabetically by system. I try to put the games within close proximity to where the console is hooked up. But outside of that I just put it wherever it fits
