Are Matt or Trey former Mormons? They seem to know a lot about them. Maybe they just have friends who are?

Trey's parents were/are Mormons if I'm not mistaken, so he probably knows quite a bit about the religion because of that.

Hmm, from what I understand this has been playing really well with mormons. I can't imagine it being any more mean-spirited than the average south park episode. Although it obviously has a longer running time.

Actually, that seems to be a common misconception.
Reason: How were each of you raised religiously?

Stone: I was raised agnostic. There was no religion in my house.

Parker: I was pretty much the same. My father tried to raise me Buddhist, as in Alan Watts Buddhism, which is Buddhism in a way.

Reason: I have Mormon friends who are convinced you guys were raised Mormon, because of some of the references in the show.

Parker: Well, we grew up in Colorado. Colorado’s right next to Utah—you know, Mormon Central. My first girlfriend was Mormon, and I went to experience family home evening at her house for the first time. “What are you all doing?” “We’re sitting, and we’re singing songs and playing games together.” I was like, “Boy, that’s fucked up. Families are not supposed to be doing that.”

Are you referring to the drunken commentary? It's actually pretty funny, but I don't see how it relates to people thinking Trey's parents were Mormon. Unless I'm missing something...

So I saw this back in April. I took a trip to New York specifically to see it. The show is hilarious. The songs are fantastic, but they also have some amazing dialog in between the songs. The audience was a mix of ages up to the elderly and the entire audience was howling. I had a 60 year old couple next to me that couldn't get enough of it. This thing is going to win Best Musical and go on tour at some point, and I recommend it to everyone. It's really not mean spirited, no more so than the Joseph Smith episode of South Park.
