Help With PC (Connecting to Internet)

Post by darthmunky »

I just formated my uncle's laptop and did a fresh windows install. Now I'm having a problem connecting to the internet, it doesn't even recognize my wireless access point at all. It's as if the card was physically removed from the laptop. He has no driver software and can't update any drivers because, well, it can't connect... Anyone know what's going on?

You need the drivers of course.

Look up your laptop model on a computer that does have internet access, find out what wireless card is inside, and get the driver for it. Then, transfer the driver over to a USB Stick/CD/DVD/whatever, and install it on the laptop. :)

Hmm, it seems that all installs I transfer to it do not work! When I click the setup, the black command prompt screen pops up for like half a second then nothing happens!

OK, I guess it sounds like you're running Windows, though we still don't know which version.

Open a command window and navigate to the directory where you have your setup file. Then, execute it from the command prompt. That way, you'll see any error messages that pop up instead of the window disappearing.

Did you look up the laptop model like Irixith said to make sure you were downloading the correct drivers? You can't always be sure, that's it's running original specs, though.

I suggest going to the device manager under the control panel and seeing what, if any, devices are listed with an exclaimation point on their icon. Your wireless card should be like this. There may be information on that screen that can clue you in on the model of wireless card installed.

I put Vista Home Premium on it. It can't run Windows 7... I got it working! Turns out the USB drive I was transferring from was not transferring the files very well so they were corrupted. I used a different thumb stick and installed the driver, I am now connected! It seems his laptop has less than 1gb of RAM though... Pretty bad.

My non-work computer has less than one gig of RAM. My work computer has two.
