I got the e-mail. It does not say used, so I assume it would only be on a new PS3. Also, if you did not get the email yet, just log into your power-up account. It should be there, unless it is in fact a random offer.

I might have to get a PS3 now, I have been wanting one for a while, and this is a pretty good deal.

Then my theory is that it was only given to people who paid for their power-up card (as there is a free version), or it was randomized within people who paid for the card.

As for why Gamestop is offering the deal at all, some people are speculating that Sony might be making a console announcement at E3. While a PS4 announcement is unlikely, there may be another price drop, or some new bundle deals.

The other theory is that Sony is trying to revitalize sales after the PSN fuck up.

A lot of speculation going on here!

This is what was emailed to me and I have the free card.

Members-Only Exclusive!

Purchase a new 160 or 320 GB Sony PlayStation 3 between now and Sunday, May 29, and get $100 off*!

This hot deal requires a coupon to receive the discount, but we've got you covered! Look for the coupon in your Active Offers section of your PowerUp Rewards account. Simply log in, print your members-only coupon, and get to your nearest GameStop store.

Haven't seen all the PlayStation 3 can do? Check out full product details for the 160GB and 320GB systems to help you decide. We think both are stunning in black!

Don't forget to bring your coupon, and swipe your PowerUp Rewards card to get $100 off!

All right I'm back.

According to the FAQ on the power up rewards site:
4. Can I give an electronic certificate to a friend or family member?

Um, no. Even if it's your best friend. Certificates are not transferable and may not be combined among PowerUp Rewards members or conveyed by any means to anyone.
I think the coupons are actually tied to an individual's account so I'd have to drive like 18 hours to meet you at your local gamestop and buy the ps3 for you.

I'm not going to use mine, so if someone didn't get the coupon and wanted to get this deal I'd be willing to mail the coupon and one of my cards to them. It's not like they check your ID to make sure it's your power up card or anything, so I'm sure it would work if the coupon is tied to the account.

Alright, I went and used my coupon, and guys at gamestop told me that the company went through everyone's purchase history to try and determine who did not already own a PS3. Because it is not an exact science, people who were likely candidates to have not already owned a PS3 got the coupon.

Also, you do get a new system, nothing used or anything like that.

Did they really use "um, no" in the official faq?

I suppose that makes sense since I just let them con me into getting a card the other weekend, so my grand total of purchases on my card since they started tracking me is Korg DS-10+, the PS2 Splitfish controller, and Metroid Other M.
