Unfortunately 4-5 is kind of standard for most $60 FPSs these days, so I was glad to get a few extra hours in the single player. It is longer than the more recent COD games, for example. I haven't tried the co-op campaign yet, but that would probably add a few more hours as well.MrEco wrote:I haven't actually played it myself. but I"ve heard from many other people and many reviews that the game is indeed very short. I've heard most people say its about 5 hours long so that's why I chose it for my example. It could very well be an exaggeration though the game is definitely short even if its 10 hours long.Xeogred wrote:I keep hearing this about Portal 2, is this for real? I remember one of the biggest reasons I was excited about it was because hey, they're hyping it up to be a full game this time! When the original Portal was like a teaser kind of and only a few hours long. Just a "few more" hours longer basically is kind of disappointing to hear.MrEco wrote:Portal 2 being a 5 hour long experience for $60.

It's only 37$ on Steam, you are being ripped offMrEco wrote:Portal 2 being a 5 hour long experience for $60.
The first Portal took me around 6 hours, not taking into account the extra puzzles so it seems the sequel is similarly short.
If they are 6 good hours it will be worth it. I feel too many games are artificially dragged out.
In the end, money is not such a big issue for me as time and competition from other games. It's not about Portal 2 costing 37€, it's about it costing as much as eight other games I want or a brand new boardgame.

having Alyx be another player will ruin the experience. the game will no longer feel the same and you wont have such a connection to characters.

Gabe Newell, CEO of Valve comments on this debate:
“I think what we’re trying to talk about is the fact that, not that we’re not doing single player games. Portal 2 was a pretty good example of what we’ve learned over the years in terms of how to create those experiences. It’s more that we think we have to work harder in the future, that entertainment is inherently increased in value by having it be social, by letting you play with your friends, by recognizing that you’re connected with other people.
“…That’s the thing that we’re trying to say, is that, single player is great but we also have to recognize that you have friends, and we wanna have that connected as well. So, it’s not about giving up on single player at all, it’s like saying, we actually think that there’s a bunch of features and capabilities that we need to add into our single player games to recognize the socially connected gamer.”

But what about socially unconnected gamers, like me, who only care about single player? It means when I buy a game, half of it is useless to me.J T wrote:Gabe Newell, CEO of Valve comments on this debate:

If the core single player experience is still strong, why do you care?BoringSupreez wrote:But what about socially unconnected gamers, like me, who only care about single player? It means when I buy a game, half of it is useless to me.

Cause no matter how good it is, it's still not as strong as it could have been. That's my main beef with wishy, washy games that try to do bothJ T wrote:If the core single player experience is still strong, why do you care?BoringSupreez wrote:But what about socially unconnected gamers, like me, who only care about single player? Whatever amount of time went into that multi-player made could have been used to make the single player mode better. Instead, we wait on a sequel to see those single player improvements.
Mass Effect 1, Mass Effect 2 and Batman:Arkham Asylum would not be as awesome as they were if they wasted time, money and resources on multi-player modes.
