It overcomes the odds. I thought the humor of the goofy concept would wear off after about 5 minutes, but the game so fully explores the idea and creates a ludicrous world around this whole idea of a "b-ball cyberpocalypse", that you can't help but to buy in. The humor stays surprisingly fresh throughout.
It's also a better RPG than you would expect. While there's not a lot in the way of exploration, there are a lot of clever ideas in the battle system that make the game fun and keep with its off the wall humor. For example, status effects include things like diabetes, aspergers, and glaucoma. These can be cured by insulin, alcohol, and chups respectively. The battle system also includes timed shot mechanics similar to old sports games. For example, if you hold and release a jump shot at the height of Barkley's jump shot, it does more damage on the enemy.
The game even provides some change ups to the core gameplay so that it never feels stale. I'm about halfway through the game now and on a quest to find a cure for Type 2 Diabetes. The game has suddenly taken on a point n click mechanic/parody where I have to choose examine, use, or take options. It's really a much better rpg than you would expect from something where the premise is just one big sarcastic joke.
