The pace picks up some, but there's still a lot of world building going on. There are a few fights that are described in detail, but there are others where we just find out about the aftermath.

Dune is one of the best books ever written in my opinion. Though, I could see how you could find it stale. It picks up pace a little but the beginning is very slow and long winded. I think the objective was to form a vivid and complete mental picture for the reader, and it does that very well.

my personal favorite book. i have to admit the first 4 chapters bore me a bit. but once i got a hang of the words it became one of the most memorable stories of my life. now, im not sure if this is with only a few editions, but my copy has it's own mini dictionary in the back. use this if you have it. it helps you understand a lot. seriously keep on trying, you will not regret it.
I read through Dune about a year and a half ago, and while it did start off a bit slow, I thought it did a better job with pacing by the end. As folks have said though, it requires a massive amount of world building, so you have to slog through a lot of explanation and description...though admittedly I liked that. I felt it was really easy to be drawn into the Dune universe, with its political intrigue and merciless brutality. For me the biggest problem was not seeing Gurney Halleck as Patrick Stewart...which I actually gave up on pretty quick, as Patrick Stewart's awesome.

LOL I still imagine Gurney as Patrick Stewart saying young pup...
It usually takes me just a few pages to get the feel for the book if i don't like the style of the writing i just put it down. Im not saying you should give up on Dune as it is a good book but if you don't like the style it won't get any better.
first third of the book is a bit slow, then it picks up fast. The next two move much faster. God-emperor is a bit slow because it's Herbert throwing his philosophy everywhere. I didn't like Heretics as much, but they're world-rebuilding after a very long period of time. It's quite literally not the same universe anymore.
