Well, most of them are not impostors. It is a pretty simple concept that existed before Dragon Quest. Giant Rats are probably even more ubiquitous.

yeah that's really the thing. We all know DQ didn't INVENT the character, but people tend to associate The Slime with DQ. He's an iconic character for the franchise.
