Good idea. I believe I'll start with either the Dreamcast since I already purchased one with a number of games, or the PSX. However I've heard there is an emulator that plays PSX games better than the PSX does itself so there is no need to buy the system or the games. Is this true?

The PSX emulators have graphic filters that make the graphics appear smoother ala PS2's emulation. Nothing really plays better, or at least as pain free as the original console though.

Welcome back to old school gaming! It's cool that you started with the Odyssey. I started with the TI-94/a (16-bit in the early 80s, yeah!).

Like others have said, try to stick to games that you'll have fun playing.

You'll have a great time revisiting old favourites, and hopefully discovering some new (old) games! I kind of classify anything Dreamcast and older as retro.

Some recommendations that you may have missed: try to get into the TG-16 (along with Super CD games!). There is some great stuff there if you haven't discovered it before. Likewise, get into the Sega Saturn (and Master System, Genesis and Sega CD if you haven't!). The TG-16 (aka. PC Engine) and Saturn are both especially good for Japanese import games. Japanese games (and the consoles!) are, way more often than not, cheaper to import than get locally (like Saturn Bomberman). There were also lots of great games released there that didn't make it over.

I say always go original console over emulators. NOTHING can replace the feeling of playing on the original thing the way it was meant to be played.

My recommendations for the perfect "standard" retro console set:

Turbografx-16 w/CD-ROM & Super CD card (or Turbo Duo, or preferably, PC Engine Duo)
Sega Genesis w/Sega CD

Saturn

3DO
Jaguar

Get these two and discover a TON of games you'll love that you didn't know about before.

NOW is the time to buy them at Gamestop, so many so cheap! Get a Fat PS2 and be prepared to be amazed what a retro console can do:

Thanks for the advice. I have no intentions of collecting anything that I or my kids don't enjoy playing. I sampled all the Dreamcast games I recently purchased beforehand, and will do so as well for future purchases by using emulators or whatnot. I never did understand the collectors that wanted EVERY game, even the horrible ones.

Nice choice with the Dreamcast! It was my first retro console, and buying one was likely the best gaming decision I ever made [second was hacking my PSP ].

Actually, I think it was my first retro console I hadn't previously owned. That said, I bought my NES, Virtual Boy and CDi pretty much at the same time too, so I can't be sure.

Agree, wait till you discover all the Homebrew games and Emulators such as SNES, Genesis and even DOS Graphic Adventures for it.

What I consider to be the best version of the rail music shooter game REZ. Came out first on the Dreamcast, the vibration pak beats to the "Vibes". Really, the controller will vibrate out of your hands. Dramatically adds to the affect of this one of a kind Tron inspired game.

Look for the beta "K-Project Vibes" as well, it has different music.
