Clearly you've never worked on a large software project.

You're right, I haven't. I'm just being an ass really.

I know its more complicated than that. Its just an easy situation to make fun of.

My parents told me yesterday that they keep reading about it in their newspaper.

Oh god that false news is already spreading.

May 31st is when all PSN services will be up by at the latest. They are most notably talking about the store when they mention the 31st. Online play, friends lists, trophies and all that are still "soon". They are in the final testing phase for those features to return.

Um, with the way things are going, I honestly wouldn't be surprised if even the most basic functions of PSN are not online until May 31st. Sony missing the supposed deadline this last weekend is pretty serious. I mean... Kaz himself got on stage basically in front of the world and stated service should be returning within the week and that isn't what happened. That doesn't look good at all.

I personally think they are stalling to figure out what to do about all of the hacker threats being made. However, the lack of public communication is astounding. Seybold's little blog posts are worthless. They need to give people a deadline and meet it at this point.

If you had told me back in 2004 that Sony would be the laughing stock of the gaming community in 2011, I would have been incredulous. There's no way, I would have said. I know that what goes up must come down but to see the company that came out of nowhere to dominate the video game market for two generations running get reduced to this? It's shocking.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

I echo that statement. The distance they have fallen is absolutely amazing.

I maintain that this is the last Sony console I will buy. And I honestly do not think they will recover from this. Public opinion may improve over time, but at this point in time, today, 5/9/2011 I do not see Sony staying in the home video game business after Playstation 3.

Don't get me wrong, Sony has had a lot of this coming. They have failed to have the foresight it takes to stay competitive in this business. From the lack of coherency in PSN's early days (they had years to watch how Microsoft was doing it... and they didn't) to the ludicrous initial pricing of the Playstation 3, Sony has been making horrible decisions left and right. The ripples from that initial Playstation splash from the E3 1995 $299 USD pricing announcement are gone. But the amount of hate being shoveled their way is confusing.

Maybe it's a combination of everything above and the generally outspoken "Japan isn't cool anymore" movement of the video game industry. Is the removal of "Other OS" really so significant that it would enrage a group of hackers so much that they would attempt to take down a multi-billion dollar company? You could argue that they handled the situation with Hotz improperly, but let's not kid ourselves. Given Sony's history, he knew what he was getting into. It's like provoking a junkyard dog and then leading a crusade against the animal when it finally attacks.
