What's the point of registering and then never posting?

I don't go to the b/s/t forum very often, but when I do I'm always surprised that I only recognize like 1% of the people that post there.

I don't think it's the case here, but I know many other forums require registration before accessing hyperlinks or attachments.

I really hate forums that do that; especially ones that I have no intention of ever returning to.
