what are some good rpgs for snes??

One of the cheapest and best rpgs I have found is Lufia and the Fortress of Doom. I picked up mine for 5 bucks on ebay. I do see it go for more, but you can generally find a decent deal on this game.

Another great cheap title is Illusion of Gaia. It's an action/rpg from Enix. Really fun game, and usually you can find it for less than 10 dollars.

Definately get Zelda: A link to the past. One of the best Zeldas out there.

There are a bunch more great titles but my favorites get a little expensixe. In addition to the titles above here are my favorites:

Breath of Fire 2 (1 is ok)
Chrono Trigger (you can get the PS1 Final Fantasy Anthology with FF1 & Chrono Trigger for cheap)

Will that PS1 FFiv and chrono trigger play on our U.S systems.
I thought about buying it and using it on my ps2, but i heard that it was a JPN release unless your PS was chipped it wouldn't' run.

The must haves were already mentioned but no one mentioned EVO Search for Eden. This is a great game, may be a little hard to find and may cost some money, but more then worth getting.

This game is a little unknown, as a lot of people I mention it to never heard of it. I'll give a brief description (game play, not story). You evolve through the different major periods of Earth's history. Of course, you start out as a fish. This game is very unique the way you level up, as it is all up to you. When you kill en enemy, you get experience points that you spend (like money) on what you want to evolve (or level up). So as a fish, you can upgrade your jaws (attack), fins (speed), horn (extra attack), thicker skin (defense) etc. Each period (called chapters) is split up into levels on a map, and there's always a boss fight at the end. Usually there's boss fights in the middle. After the fish, you become an amphibian, onto a dinosaur (having the option to evolve into a bird, which I highly recommend doing), then a mammal for the ice age, always starting at 'level 0' as your new specie. After the ice age period, you don't automatically evolve in the next period. You stay your current mammal, leveled up as you were in the last period. Its up to you, if you can figure out how to evolve into a human. There's also some secret evolves like the bird that I mentioned, or a mermaid in the last period (very good to use in the last ocean stage) among other secret creatures that you can only use for a short while (good to save and use for boss fights).

It isn't turn based like a Final Fantasy game, its more like Symphony of the Night or something similar. Its a side scroller, you fight in real time. Most levels are pretty straight forward, some have multiple paths (being able to find items in hidden areas). Some levels are straight up mazes, and some are hard to navigate.

This is one of my favorite games for the SNES. Not only because it's so much fun, but also because how unique it is. Sure, you level up like in any other RGP game, but because its evolution and your own choice makes it so much fun. Also sports great music among other things like watching the world map slowly change from Pangaea (chapter 2) into the continents as we know them today.

If you're going the emulation route, there are several Japan-only RPGs you can pick up:

Seiken Densetsu 3
Star Ocean (being re-released in the US for PSP)
Tales of Phantasia (was ported to US GBA)
Final Fantasy V (was ported to US GBA)
Terranigma (technically it's not Japan only, but never got a US release)

It was also on PS1 as "Final Fantasy Collection" which also included 6. I didn't play much of it, but I didn't care for what I've seen. Most people say that game is horrible, and there was a reason it was never brought over to the USA.

Actually, I consider V to be one of the best in the series... Here's a little info from an old interview with Ted Woolsey about why FFV might never have made it. It appeared in the September 1994 issue of Super Play Magazine.

"The Final Fantasy series basically has two separate tracks: the odd series (FFI, FFIII, and FFV) are controller command drive games, whereas the even series are more storyline driven games. As for FFV though, well although we're sure it's a great title it hasn't been a hit with too many people in out-focus groups, although the more experienced gamers loved the complex character building - it's just not accessible enough to the average gamer. But we're determined we want to release it so we're going to wait and introduce it once there's a larger audience for it's particular style. Hence the wait."

Honestly, I wonder if it was the difficulty and job classes he's referring to. After Final Fantasy, it really wouldn't see an appearance in the FF games in the US until Final Fantasy Tactics, which was released almost eight years later.

Also, according to Game Trailer's Final Fantasy Video Retrospective, several reasons for FFV's nonrelease in the US included Square and Nintendo's steadily cooling relationship, FFIV's poor sales figures outside of Japan on the SNES, and even the length of time a full translation would have required. Square also tried at least twice to bring the game to the SNES and once to the PC, but the project apparently never got anywhere.
