DC? Saturn? Convince Me!
DC? Saturn? Convince Me!
I'm a self proclaimed Nintendo fanboy! I've owned everything they produced since the Snes, and exclusively emulate anything I didn't own. However, my console gaming started with the Sega Master System. I loved Sonic so much back then but I was too young to have allegiances to a certain company, if you see what I mean
. So basically what I’m asking is, is it worth getting a Saturn or Dreamcast off eBay and catching up with Sega? There have been no games from either system that have caught my eye enough to buy one so far. So am I really missing out?

I also rent and sell PS2, Wii and XBOX softmod-kits and I collect DVD movies let me know what you have.
I'm quite a fan of arcade shooters, but i dont think enough to warrent buying a system for it. 1942/3 satisfy me plenty enough.
I hadn't really thought about emulation. I've read that Saturn is a B!T&^ to emulate because of the bizarre dual core processor arrangement. I just assumed that Dreamcast would be the same if not worse. Looks like a trip to Google is in order for me! I'm really not a fan of fighters, but again I'm quite happy to become a convert if someone can show me one i must own. I really hope the retro club that Racketboy is suggesting takes off, I love discovering strange games from the past that offer great gaming, whatever system its on.

Actually, the SSF emulator for Sega Saturn is very good, most games run flawlessly. The only catch is you need a fairly good computer for things to run well. Dreamcast is easier, part of the reason why the Dreamcast has so many great arcade style games and ports is because it and the Naomi arcade board are pretty much the same, with the Naomi having more RAM (I think twice as much). Part of the reason for the Saturn being a flop is because it was a pain to code for, they fixed that with the Dreamcast. There are a couple of great Dreamcast emulators out there, there is Chankast, but the developers have stopped making it. There is a fairly new one out called NullDC, I have tried it and it's just as good, if not better than Chankast.
Like Mozgus said, you should see for yourself which one you like and make your decision based on that, because really both are awesome consoles.

SSF is pretty much entirely CPU dependant. You dont need amazing RAM or a great video card. It's pretty much all about the CPU. I don't even know how well it makes use of multiple cores either, so even a high end pentium 4 should do well.Caboose wrote:Actually, the SSF emulator for Sega Saturn is very good, most games run flawlessly. I disagree. Each system has 10-20 really good US titles. Here's the kicker...if you want quality games for the Saturn be willing to fork out some serious cash. Games like Guardian Heros, Dragon Force & Shining Force III go for 60 to 100 bucks. But If you are a fan of shmups, then you have to get a Saturn. There are so many awesome imports and a few good US releases (Darius Gaiden & Gallactic Attack), and all you need is an Action Replay or Import key to play Japanese games. Also most of the acarde ports of Capcom fighters are near perfect. Plus you can mod it easily and play burned games too.peace4myheart wrote:Not many good games on both systems as far as the US is concerned. Import is where it's at, trust me.
On the other hand you can pick up many decent titles for the Dreamcast for under or around 20 dollars. Cool shmups like Mars Matrix, Cannon Spike, GigaWing 1 & 2 and Gunbird 2 are in that price range. Plus alot good Capcom fighters(JoJo's Bizzare Adventure is my fav) and a few nice RPG titles like Grandia 2 and Skies of Arcadia. It plays burned games too, although depending if the game has alot of data or not the quality can be kinda shakey because you have to compress the files from a 1.7 gb GD-rom format to fit on a 70mb CD-R.
I think the Saturn is my favorite of the two.
no need to mod a pal dc to play burns, best excuse ever.

Well I live in Paris so baisically all of my games I buy come off eBay UK, it's either that or run the chance of getting a fully francophone version (had that happen to me with a copy of Half-Life for Playstation 2, man was I annoyed!) I'm going to keep my eye out for a PAL Dreamcast for a fair price. 20 to 30 pounds would do it with enough extras to keep me satisfied for a couple of months. I didnt know you could play burned games straight onto one unmodded. Sounds promising! Thanks for your help guys, I've been a reader for a couple of weeks but only just started posting stuff.
