Original Xbox getting no power

Post by Rebz »

Hey guys, I recently picked up an xbox with a crystal case from a thrift store. I noticed that it was opened before but I took the risk anyways seeing that I had extra xboxes lying around and I could just swap the cases. So when I plugged it in, it did exactly what I thought it would do; nothing.

I opened it up hoping to be able to fix it (which is a pretty ridiculous expectation because I'm not experienced at all with this kind of stuff). When I cracked it open I was surprised to see an extra chip inside. I then did some research on the net and discovered that it was a mod chip (the duoX2). I think it's a v1.6 installation.

So my question is, is it possible that the modder did a poor job which could somehow affect the console? Or does the problem have nothing to do with the chip at all? Should I even be trying to salvage this hunk of junk or am I wasting time? I think it would be neat to get a modded box but I don't really know what the issue is. I tried looking up an older thread but that just turned into a softmod thread. Is there a way to tell if the thing is just fried? I have no tools other than screw drivers lol. So I think I'm going to have to learn to solder. Are there any cheap ones that you guys recommend? Right now there seems to be two wires that attach to nothing. I also accidentally yanked out the one going to the power button

Thanks in advance and hopefully I'll be able to get a modded xbox up and running :D

Hopefully these pictures help

The last pic was taken before I pulled out the wire hehe

EDIT: I did more research and it looks like the chip was put in upside down. Does that completely destroy it?

Also I followed the wiring and I seem to have a random one not on this chart.

The first thing I would check is to find a spot on the board that is labeled 5v and gnd. Put probes on those two points to see that you're getting power from the power supply.

This may sound stupid but what are probes? Are they part of a voltmeter? Also where would I put them exactly? I found the two points but where would I make contact? from underneath? Or touch the wires directly?

I suspect as you stated in the OP, a failed mod. The pics and your honesty on low electronics knowledge really help here. Might be good to get an electrician friend who can test the circuits first hand. The voltmeter will tell if at least there is power to the board but little else.

To confirm the XBox is still working you might have to completely remove the mod chip. Be sure all the solder traces are sound, none accidently jumped to nearby pads.
