The Next Generation of Retro Gamers

I didn't hear anything about retrogaming until five years ago. Now all the main gaming sites and forums talk about old stuff regularly.

If anything, retrogaming seems to be going more and more mainstream.

I've noticed this too. The prices on retro gaming hardware have risen too. It's bizarre to me.

I also share Hatta's sentiments that current gen will probably never be considered "retro".

I bet few though that people would still be playing NES 15 years later back when the SNES was still current gen. Don't underestimate the power of nostalgia.

It may sound silly but I think gaming could develop where the most recent retro is called retro and the stuff we call retro now could be called "classical". It hasn't been around long enough for anyone to know.

What is stranger to consider is what it will be like when we are all old. Nursing homes that have a Genesis hooked up... ect...

Most of the kids I have come across dismiss all retro games as bad because of things like graphics and online gameplay. I have heard kids 'nostalgia' over Halo, but not give a crap about Sonic and Knuckles.

But even the original halo didn't have online play.

In terms of classifying retro games I rank the first game ever to the video game crash as the "classical" period. Next I go from the NES's launch to the launch of the Dreamcast as the "Retro" period, and the birth of the Dreamcast as the start of modern gaming, since it introduced many features that are commonplace for consoles nowadays.

That was the point of this post, the kids that I teach do care about Genesis, NES, N64 etc.
Don't get me wrong all the "cool" kids love the 360 and PS3, but there is a couple small groups that really dig the classics like we do... even if it's on the Virtual Console they are all about the OG Zelda, Mega Man, Super Metroid, etc.

i really feel that kids really dismiss older games before they even try it. i would think that if a kid picked up a fun game, they would find it to be loads of fun. i have also overheard a kid in a gamestop dismiss buying a compilation of games (like the genesis collections). he asked why anyone would want to buy a collection of old mini-games... it's there that we realize that he does not know anything of what he is talking about and has never actually sat down to experience it. the best way to get the next retro gamers is to have it as something memorable. im sure we can all remember a time we would play these now "old mini-games" with our parents or siblings, something that really brought you together with someone you care about. i know spacebooger's class will always remember that awesome teacher that played video games in class, they will relate that memory to a good experience and relate retro games as something cool and awesome. just a series of idea's may or may not be completely out there.
