Creepy funny thing: Number Stations

Post by Erik_Twice »

I was randomly browsing Youtube when I came across a somewhat creepy but interesting video. If you tune a certain radio frequency at a set time you can hear misterious stations that seem to only transmit random strings of numbers. What are they? Who is transmiting?

Youtube link of one of those radio stations:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ua94OV9Ter8

After informing myself it seems that those "Number Stations" are broadcasting secret codes for spies everywhere. It doesn't matter if it's in plain sight, the codes cannot be broken and you can transmit them from a safe place in your country. The station I linked above was located in Cyprus and could be heard all over the Middle East.

While no goverment has ever admitted the use of such stations, in 2001 five cuban spies were arrested after using one to get messages from Cuba.

It's a very interesting topic! What do you think? 8)

That is very very odd. I never knew anything about them. Are they the inspiration for the numbers storyline in Lost?

I heard so but I'm not sure. Seems likely.

Assuming these really are something, it might be funny to screw with people by making another fake one.

Seeing how they emit all the time and you can give random numbers it's not like it would be very different :lol:

@aaron

We did? It would be cool if you can dig it back.

I am only bumping this because I remember a certain show I watched had an episode built around something very similar to this. It might have been Fringe. It certainly fits in with the kind of things they explore on that show. Plus, Fringe is basically Lost's little brother

Actually, here it is. Season 3 spoilers for anyone who cares

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/6955_kHz

Lost featured a specific set of numbers that kept re-appearing in different places and was also broadcast by certain people. Hurley won the lotto with those numbers, but then believed that they were cursed when all kinds of unlucky things started happening to him and anyone around him, often connected in some way to that number sequence. They did eventually reveal the significance of the numbers, but that is a big spoiler for anyone who hasn't watched Lost all the way through

There was an episode of Fringe that referred to these things. Kinda neat and kinda creepy.
