The Next Generation of Retro Gamers

My students know I'm a retro gamer and I have a NES and Dreamcast in my classroom. I use the NES and the original Super Mario Bros to teach the Scientific Method on the 2nd day of school.

Not only do I reference retro games in class many of my students are playing the N64 again. There was rumbling about one kid who hosted a Golden Eye tournament/gathering last weekend.

Anyway, anyone else have any insight on the next gen who will take over our mantle as 8/16/32 Bit Classic Gamers?

*Edit: I should mention that the student who sent this dressed up in a home made Link costume for Halloween this year. He has to be the next generation of retro gamers!

If you think about it, the Wii, PS3 and 360 will become "retro games" for the kids of today.

..and then the retro remakes and such that are so popular today will be retro in your retro..and don't anyone dare post that Yo Dawg! picture!

I think someone will take our place. Even though you are right about the Wii, 360, etc but this guy and others in my building are about the classic systems especially the N64.

I really hope that our retro games don't fade into obscurity, but I have to say, I haven't met many kids of today who are even remotely interested even as far back as the SNES.

Not to much talk of the SNES. The Genesis and NES are another story.

I am always asked where I got my NES and I tell them that the one at home is my original and the one at school I got at a yard sale for $5. They act surprised and hopeful all at the same time.
Many of my students ask where to buy it and many of them have been given NESs and Genesis by relatives and there is a mini retro revival in the small town where I work.

Why I hate collecting out on the field:

I have been scavenging thrift shops for longer than I can remember looking for pieces to add to my collection. Today, i decided to visit a brand new store that had a Genesis and a Dreamcast in the window. Some 12 year old kid grabbed the Dreamcast and was like, "What the hell is this?" "It's a Dreamcast, son." He glanced it over, "Never heard of it. I know what a Nintendo is, but this is old."

I cant believe that that is "old". I mean, I had some kid a few years back try to tell me he was a venerable expert on video games only to look at a Genesis and start asking annoying questions. "Whats that? Whats 16 bit mean?" According to kids, there were only 4 video game systems: Atari, Nintendo, 360, PS3....

My poor collection.....

Speaking of horrible generalizations by self-proclaimed gamers...it drives me bonkers when people call the Genesis a "Sega". Every time a customer asks me if we have any "Segas" I have to use every last ounce of energy I have not to go on some rant along the lines of "Sega? The company? No, we don't carry 'Sega'. The systems they made though, sure. Were you perhaps looking for Master System? Game Gear? Genesis? Nomad? Saturn? Dreamcast? We carry all of those, but certainly nothing just called simply 'Sega' etc etc etc"...even though whenever they ask that I KNOW they're asking for Genesis -___-

...on topic, I can say with 100% certainty that there is no shortage of young people with an interest in retro games. It's always funny to see these parents come in shaking their heads in amusement as they pick up a SNES or Saturn or something for Christmas because that's what their kid asked for instead of a 360 or PS3 (and the following year, when they come in for a Master System or 2600 or TG16 or...).

Honestly I find it hard to blame them. Genesis was, in the US at least, probably sega's only truly successful console.

Agreed. This always has and always will drive me absolutely fucking crazy.

Genesis is NOT hard to remember. Christ.
