Game save data for PS1 and PSN?
Odd question... but let's say (hypothetically) that I downloaded a PS1 game on PSN. For sake of example, say FFVII. And then let's say I had a PS1 memory card with a game save. If I was able to transfer this game save to a USB drive and plug it into my PS3, will that game save work on the PSN copy of the game?
Re: Game save data for PS1 and PSN?
You can actually.
Move your original PS1 save to a PS2 memory card, and then import that PS1 save from the PS2 memory card to your virtual PS1 memory card on your PS3. You'll need a PlayStation 3 Memory Card Adaptor to perform this magical feat though.
I don't know of any other way to do it (i.e. I don't know that it's possible via USB drive), but I do know that the above method works perfectly fine.
Edit: Edited for clarity.

The only problem is that you need PSN.

couldn't I move the save from the PS2 card to a USB drive (via ulaunchelf) and then stick the USB drive into my PS3? Meaning, does the PS3 recognize a USB thumbdrive as a memory card?irixith wrote:You can actually.

and to clarify, the other half of my question is basically is the PSN version of a game the same damn thing as the physical copy, to the extent that the save is compatible with both versions?
Re: Game save data for PS1 and PSN?
I don't know, I've never tried to see if the PS3 will read a PS1/PS2 save off a USB drive. I'm pretty sure you can't though, or else the adapter wouldn't exist and there'd be tons of info around Google about it. :pnoiseredux wrote:couldn't I move the save from the PS2 card to a USB drive (via ulaunchelf) and then stick the USB drive into my PS3? Yes, the save is compatible with both versions of the game. I've been able to move saves back and forth successfully between retail and PSN PS1 games without issue.
Re: Game save data for PS1 and PSN?
I've used saves interchangeably with a PSN copy of FFVII and a physical copy being played on my PS3 in the past. They both seem to save to the same virtual memory card on my PS3 without issue, so I'm pretty sure it should be compatible with the saves on original memory cards.noiseredux wrote:couldn't I move the save from the PS2 card to a USB drive (via ulaunchelf) and then stick the USB drive into my PS3? Re: Game save data for PS1 and PSN?
I'm curious about seeing if I can transfer some saves to my PS3 as I have a lot of old PS1 saves but is there any easy way to put PS1 saves that I have on an old memory card onto a USB stick? That damn adapter is never less than twenty bucks when I see it, so I always hesitate and never get it.irixith wrote:I don't know, I've never tried to see if the PS3 will read a PS1/PS2 save off a USB drive. @Noise
Apparently this method works if you have the save file on a USB drive:

I probably would have just stuck it in and hoped it worked, without realizing you need to create a folder structure.
So once it's in the virtual memory card I don't see any reason it wouldn't work on PSN games based on my experience with saving between them and physical copies.

..and good to know it can be done via USB stick. I figured if it was possible to transfer that way, someone here would know about it.

Re: Game save data for PS1 and PSN?
thanks for yr help man! This looks like exactly what I was after. And if physical-to-PSN versions of a game are the same, should accomplish what I was hoping. Thanks again!Czernobog wrote:@Noise
