Need some good retro basball game recommendations.

Post by Evildeadmanwalking77 »

Batter up! Ok guys, I need some help w/ recommendations for some retro baseball games since I have the fever right now. I'm mainly looking for a games similar to Baseball Simulator 2K on NES & SNES. I don't mind games with MLB and/or MLBPA licenses but it doesn't have to have them. I do want to be able to play some sort of season mode where I'm not always the road or away team that bats first, alot of early baseball games had you batting first all the time (i.e. NES Baseball, Bad News Baseball, etc). I'm also mostly interested in suggestions for all systems except: PS2 & 3, Dreamcast, Saturn, Game Cube, Wii, Xbox & 360. I really curious about some of the hand held system baseball games too (all Game Boy systems, Game Gear, etc). I know it's a weird request but I appreciate everyone's suggestions on this.
I am addicted to video games, especially retro gaming from my era. I have: NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, Gamecube, Gameboy, GBA, Wii, Sega Genesis, Sega CD, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, Xbox, and Xbox 360. I have probably over 1,000 games in total for all these systems combined. Yes, I need help and I wouldn't have it any other way! This is my passion and hey my wife still loves me!!

I've played just about every baseball game released for the GB in the past year. My favorite is definitely Bases Loaded. The launch title, Baseball is pretty good play-wise as well, but far limited than Bases Loaded (just single games, no season, no saves, etc).

Haha as soon as I read the thread title I was going to recommend Baseball Simulator 2000. Looks like you already found it :). Fantastic title, I played it all throughout my childhood. There is also Base Wars which I love as well. If you haven't played it, definitely hunt it down. You play as robots and also engage in robot fights if you get an out. That and baseball simulator are my 2 fav retro baseball games.

Check out Major League Baseball on the Intellivision. Great game. You use the numpad on the controller to select your outfielders. It's a really nice, direct, intuitive control scheme that's missing from platforms that just have a d-pad and a few buttons. It's pretty bare bones, as you might imagine, but it's a great little arcadey experience to share with a friend. No single player unfortunately.

Baseball Stars, easy. This NES game had Create-a-team and player and season play with salaries and all. Incredible for it's time.

Yessss Baseball stars is awesome!

Best handheld Baseball game definitely goes to World Series Baseball for GameGear, you have season mode, exhibition game and 2-Player Link-up to play.
Once you adjust to the retarded batter A.I pitching no-hitters and grand slams should be easy stuff.

I was gonna ask if Base Wars would count, haha. Great game.

I recommend Baseball Stars 2 for the NeoGeo. It's included on the SNK Arcade Classics Vol.1 UMD for PSP and it's a good conversion from the original ROM. The only downside you might not enjoy is that you always bat first, regardless of whether you play Season mode or not..

For NES, check out Dusty Diamond All-Star Softball I forget whether it has a season mode or not, but it plays very comparable to RBI Baseball.

Finally, I know you're aiming for more retro baseball, and that means staying away from the newer generation consoles, but have you tried out The Bigs yet? I hate how complicated baseball games are today, and yearn for the old RBI Baseball days on the NES as well, but this game is so easy to get into and so much fun! It's an arcade-like baseball game with officially licensed players and basically boils down to "if NBA Jam were a baseball game." Good stuff - don't miss out!

I agree, Baseball Stars is pretty much the definitive title for retro games. Um.. if you don't have a Geo, Bases Loaded for the NES was always fun in my opinion too, or you can get it for the GB, if you're looking for a portable experience.
My Console Collection: 3DS (JPNS), Dreamcast (US and JPNS), Genesis, N64 (US and JPNS), iPod Touch, NES, Xbox, Famicom, Colecovision, Super Famicom, Neo Geo AES, Sega Saturn, DS LL (JPNS), Neo Geo Pocket Color.
