Most used ones on ebay are in good condition. I got 2 off of ebay as backups and they are in mint condition. Get a used one and be done.

I would much prefer to have a brand new one for a few reasons, but mostly because the lasers will only work for so many hours of use and it's really impossible to say how much use the Dreamcast I'm buying has had, regardless of how good the condition looks. Plus $100 for a brand one is an extremely reasonable amount of money. I'm really regretting not getting one during the surge a few months back.

You can keep looking around Ebay which is your easiest bet. I use to look around for brand new consoles for my collection but all the steep prices turned me off. I just enjoy what I can get a hold of now in some-what mind condition and not worry about everything being brand new.

Unless you're playing CD-Rs, a used DC is going to last for a very long time. Say, 3-5 years, maybe more. With $100 you can probably get 3 or 4 used DCs. That's 9-15 years with 3 DCs and 12-20 years with 4 DCs. If you just stockpile a bunch of them you'll be able to play DC games for the rest of your life. Again, assuming no CD-Rs are in the mix.

The problem is that CD-R's have usually already been in the mix. I have bought no less than 3 Dreamcasts that were already on their last legs (including one I got here on the site from a less than reputable person) so I can understand the desire for a new one.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

That's true, but I'm sure the average person isn't even aware that the DC can read burned games and has never played a CD-R on their machine.

By that I mean, someone selling a DC on a retro game forum is most likely savvy to that kind of thing and has hammered it with a lot of CD-R time, but a DC just sitting in a retro game store was probably just traded in by some guy that had it lying for years. I can understand the want for a new one too, but just grabbing them up for cheap as you go is the better route if you ask me.

I guess another reason I prefer NIB's is that if you're going to get something modded, you want to get the maximum life out of it. And what's the point of having a DC if you can't get in on some of that sweet, sweet import action?

Yeah the problem with used things is you never know what you are going to get. The console could very well have been played on a bunch with CD-Rs It's just nice to have a brand new console especially at such a reasonable price. Also I live in Canada so it's like $40 minimum to ship a package that size here cause our postal system sucks so bad.

Anyway I actually did find a site that still has some in stock if anyone else is interested:

I bought mine already :)

I regret not stocking up back in the day when they were 49.99 at bestbuy.

Tried locally? I just bought a brand-new DC today from a guy on craigslist who just had it kicking around.
