Movie collecting question
I have recently been thinking of collecting movies, but have no idea what to do. Should I be collecting blu rays, since they are the successor to DVD and will eventually cancel out the DVD format, or should I collect the more affordable DVDs?

Re: Movie collecting question
Blu-ray has gotten more affordable thesedays, it's worth going that route if you have a nice system/HDTV setup for it and everything I'd say.
Re: Movie collecting question
just get whatever movies you like on whatever format you choose and stick with that format. also, when i buy movies, i try and find out how many different versions of that movie are available and go for the one with the most features, bonus material, etc.
i need to reorganize our movie collection here, but it just takes so goddamn long.

It will be a really long time before DVDs are phased out as everybody and their brother own tons of them so you should be safe there. Get movies that don't benefit as much from the higher resolution that blu ray has to offer (like comedies, older flicks) on DVD and save blu ray for those movies that can really take advantage of it's full effect (like action, CG animated, and heavy special effects movies).
There are loads of software available to rip either DVD or blu ray to whatever kind of digital format you like and that is what the true future movie format is going to be like eventually anyways. So either way you are future proofed there.
I personally stopped collecting movies a while ago because I hardly have time to re-watch stuff as it is. With the advent of on demand cable and Netflix streaming, there's always something I haven't seen available to watch instantly without leaving the house. For those new release movies, I can rent any flick I want within a day via Netflix by mail, and I make the occasional trip to a redbox for the stuff I want to watch immediately.
I keep a hard drive filled with the movies that my kids watch over and over and I have a few of my favorites as well on there if the need arises.

Re: Movie collecting question
I am ashamed to admit that I have 30-40 movies (DVD and Blu-Ray) sitting around that I have not yet seen. I pretty much have an embarrassing backlog of games, movies, and books. I do manage to listen to music when I buy it though, so no backlog there.

It would have been really impressive to buy a CD/MP3 and not listen to it even once.dsheinem wrote: I do manage to listen to music when I buy it though, so no backlog there.

I used to do that all the time in High School. I used to go to a used record store with some friends every few weekends and would almost always pick up a cd for a buck or two. I still have some cds I haven't entirely listened to from back then.ZeroAX wrote:It would have been really impressive to buy a CD/MP3 and not listen to it even once.dsheinem wrote: I do manage to listen to music when I buy it though, so no backlog there.

Same here. Though my video game backlog is probably a lot bigger than movies and books combined.dsheinem wrote:I am ashamed to admit that I have 30-40 movies (DVD and Blu-Ray) sitting around that I have not yet seen.
