You need a usb composite recorder, such as a Dazzle:

There are many many ways to do this though.

Turns out the Dazzle HD, just has HD capable recording software. So the standard dazzle:

Should be fine.

But really you get what you pay for with these devices. There are cheaper ones, sub $10, but they are poorly supported and typically not worth your time or money.

Dazzles pretty shittily supported as is. If you are only going to due it as a hobby it should be fine, but if you ever want to get more serious with this stuff you need to buy a 200 dollar recorder.

Just as a warning, most professional video editors like Final Cut or Premiere do not accept logging from USB, so most cheap dazzles won't work, and every version of pinnacle's dazzle software I've ever dealt with is pretty much complete crap.

That being said, it's been years since I've used any dazzle recorder and the one fastbilly1 linked to looks like it will do what you want it to with little hassle. It certainly looks much better than their older dazzle-bundled software. Make sure you read the reviews though, sounds like it works great in XP, but gives people a hard time installing into 7 and maybe Vista.

As MrHealthy said, if you want to do this a lot and seriously, expect to pay about 200 dollars for something that you will be really happy with. Either for a nice recorder/external capture device or for a nice capture card.

Figures. Jeffro has told me a million times the name of the USB video capture device he uses, but I can never remember. I've seen some videos he's made with it of SNES gameplay and it looks fantastic. I have it bookmarked on my desktop, but I'm on my laptop. It figures, every time some one asks, I don't have the link for one reason or another.

Well ofcourse if you want to do it better you need better equipment. Most people Ive talked to use the Hauppauge 1212:

Its $200 and handles component in swimmingly. Personally, when I record game footage I just cycle it through one of my deck cameras. But I havent recorded anything in some time. Like I said initially, you get what you pay for.

If you really want to do it right you need to buy a deck:

Or you could always do it the wrong way:

Now that's overkill. Of course I'm drooling over it as a videographer.

Eh, yeah, that's definitely the wrong way. I can only imagine how wrong.
