Another thing to consider is how much of an RPG fan you consider yourself to be. I for one am sometimes more lenient on the genre because I like it. I also like those special editions, so sometimes I get them even if I end up not being a fan of the game.
However, Neptunia did get some piss poor reviews, many of them under five. Bias is one thing, but its seems to be getting universally hammered.

Buy this now before it gets out of hand. NTSC-U copies are getting harder to come by already and the prices are inflating. If you have any intention of getting it, I'd say now is the time. Amazon is still offering it for $60 but they're currently out of stock, so I don't know if that means they will re-stock or not. I have a feeling this will be getting collectible, so if that makes the game more appealing to you, grab it now. I don't see it going down in price really...

Edit: amazon's stock is gone but some gamestops still have the limited editions for $60...

I think I would pass on it, everything seems very average about it. At least for some other recent games (Ar Tonelico, Atelier Iris) there were varied reviews that went from high to low. Neptunia's are just low.

Thanks for the advice everybody. I've decided to buy it. I'll let you know how it goes after I've played it a bit.

I actually liked/enjoyed this game. I think the key to going into this game is to expect nothing good. If you can manage that, this game is pretty fun. I sat down one day and played the main story all the way through.
There is a lot wrong with the game though. There are special monsters in certain dungeons you can summon that are tough for the level, but worth a monstrous amount of xp. So leveling up is just killing them over and over again if you don't want to waste your time.
There is a goddess share system in the game.. as you do sidequests in one land, that goddesses share goes up at the expense of others. The game lets you retry any battle when you die, as many times as you want. The consequence is the total goddess share amount goes down, something you can't recover (AFAIK). Since goddess share is vital to doing something later, you can lock yourself into having to do another playthrough without knowing it (although you can finish the game).
The healing system is kind of cool, but has one major flaw. It kind of resembles the gambit system from FFXII, except this time you have a point pool which go toward a probability that "restores 30% hp when struck and hp is below 50%" for example. These points can be rearranged every turn during battle, so you find yourself having a lot more control over healing than you might first think.
There are multiple levels of healing: heal 30% when under 50%, heal 50% when under 25%, heal 75% when under 10% kind of thing. If you set 100% probability for heal 30%, you will *never* trigger the heal 50% or 75%, regardless of how many points you have assigned to them. The heal 30% has to fail before either of these can be triggered. This is a pretty big blunder IMO, as it made me have to switch those probabilities far more often than I would have if they had triggered in an intuitive fashion (or even stacking on top of each other would have been nice).
Ultimately, if you're the kind of person who prides themselves on only playing fantastic games, then don't play this. If you can play a game objectively and enjoy it for what it is, then you'll likely find this to be fun.

I want to pick this up simply because NIS published it. Probably will get when I have the cash to spare in the upcoming weeks.

Re: Hyperdimension Neptunia
ALMOST grabbed it over the weekend actually. Found it at a GS new in the big collector's box for $70, which seemed too much to me. If the soundtrack came with it, I probably would have just grabbed it, but an extra $20 for just a book? Pfft. But I do plan to get it really soon (without the bonus book). It just looks so f'ing awesome. Maybe over the weekend I'll pick it up since I'm planning to go get BlazBlue CS anyway.Opa Opa wrote:I have got to get this!

I'll probably get it towards the end of this week. I don't even have a PS3 yet though.
However, now is the time to get it. GS is selling it for $60 and people are jacking up the price to over $100 elsewhere. I refuse to pay that.
