SD stuff all works fine on it since it's a CRT-HDTV (samsung slimfit). I got a PC to hook up to it and do some high def gaming, but what I'm really more interested in is playing some old DOS games in native resolution on the couch. 640x480==480P.
So i finally got a HDTV this weekend

I got an HD-TV last year. The only thing HD it gets used for is PBS OTA HD. It's like Jim Lehrer is actually in my living room.

xrgb works wonders, though it's kinda expensive.env963 wrote:So they all the old consoles look like crap on some of these new tv's, there has to be a converter or something that will make the picture look descent... otherwise what will we do when all the old tube type tv's die off.
Seriously, you can buy a really solid good size SD CRT with s-video for around 30-40 bucks. Definitely a worthy investment to make.Gamerforlife wrote:Yeah, I try and tell myself that older stuff was made for standard tvs and new stuff is made for HD. So I just enjoy my older stuff on an old tv and don't even worry about trying to play them on an HD set. Everyone should keep an old standard tv around. They will never be useless to a retro gamer
Re: So i finally got a HDTV this weekend
This makes me curious though, since one of my tubes does have S-video support, is there any noticeable difference between S-video on a CRT and S-video on an HDTV?Flake wrote:I've contemplated making the jump to 1080 but most sets with resolution above 720p seem to lack any S-video input, making me think that they would be ill suited to my Dreamcast or Saturn.

May I just say that the Saturn over s-video cables looks great on my HDTV. Over composite not so much.
It's really a shame that none of these newer HDTV's have s-video as it seems to be the only good way to enjoy standard def games on them.

you'd think a simple cable or something would exist for plugging s-video into, say, component inputs.

No, those are 7-pin connectors. S-video is only 4 pins. The other 3 pins have to carry component already. You're not getting component out of S-video without a converter IC. But it's easier to go from RGB to component, and most of these consoles do RGB anyway.

Those cables are for hooking a PC video card that's already outputting component to a TV.RyaNtheSlayA wrote:Quick search on ebay found promising results.AppleQueso wrote:you'd think a simple cable or something would exist for plugging s-video into, say, component inputs.![]()

Just want to chime in and say I definitely agree with this.RyaNtheSlayA wrote:May I just say that the Saturn over s-video cables looks great on my HDTV. Over composite not so much.
I have a pretty old HDTV with S-Video support, and it makes the Saturn look really, really good.
