So i finally got a HDTV this weekend

Post by env963 »

After years of yearning for a HDTV, I finally got a 40" Sony HDTV....1080p... I hooked up the PS3 through a HDMI cable and enjoyed as many games as I could. LOL just watching the beauty of the PS3!

I have a semi-backwards ps3 so put in REZ (ps2).. WOW, its not the same as Xbox HD rez, but holy shit! I was in heaven... now that was beautiful... sorry just rambling about how most of you guys already know this stuff. But its new to me! I am looking forward to playing uncharted 2 just to see what it looks like.. :D

Im curious how my old game systems will look on my tv though, such as my jaguar/saturn/xbox/dreamcast..

I do have a PC input on the back of the TV.. wonder if i can make the dreamcast in HD with that VGA cable...hmmm

I'm interested in knowing how your old systems play and look on that TV. Let us know.
Thanks everyone...

Congrats! I'm hoping to upgrade to an HDTV sometime in the near future, too.

You too?

I nabbed a 46" LCD display model recently myself. 1080p, 120hz... I wasn't planning on getting it but it was an offer I couldn't refuse.

Can't speak for his, but I know that ps2 games looked pretty nice on mine via the ps3. Gamecube looked crummy, but that was probably because I was using composite cables. Haven't tried anything else, since I already have a nice CRT I'd prefer to play old games on, though I'd like to check out the VGAbox on dreamcast sometime.

I wonder if the HDMI cable had anything to do with the picture of rez looking awesome... I have composite cables for my old systems, (I do have s-video), but the new tv doesn't take that kind of cable. Ill have to try other PS2 games on my setup to see how its goes. (oh, my TV is the 60hz kind)

The VGA input and DC will depend on the lowest resolution the TV will accept. If it takes 640x480 you'll be good. Older consoles are hit or miss on newer TVs depending on how they handle the upscaling.

Yeah, sadly it'll be pretty hit or miss with older systems. On my 32" Samsung anything via AV cables looks like ass (Gamecube, etc). Very muddy and washed out. I wish my HDTV had S-Video to see how that would work for some older systems, though it doesn't have that. I got component cables for my PS2 and some games look great, some look awkward. So it could be worthwhile keeping a big tube around for some occasions.

Yeah, I try and tell myself that older stuff was made for standard tvs and new stuff is made for HD. So I just enjoy my older stuff on an old tv and don't even worry about trying to play them on an HD set. Everyone should keep an old standard tv around. They will never be useless to a retro gamer

HD is pretty awesome with the new stuff though....and with a PS 3 as well you can really appreciate just how awesome a format blueray really is. I've gotten use to HD now and have sort of forgotten how awesome it feels the first time you get an HD set. Glad you're having fun

I've contemplated making the jump to 1080 but most sets with resolution above 720p seem to lack any S-video input, making me think that they would be ill suited to my Dreamcast or Saturn.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

So they all the old consoles look like crap on some of these new tv's, there has to be a converter or something that will make the picture look descent... otherwise what will we do when all the old tube type tv's die off.
