Valve "probably" done with single-player games

I thought this might be of interest to folks here. I for one really hope that they don't move in this direction - at the very least not until after HL2E3 and/or HL3.

Thoughts?

I think it's unwise to take any options off the table when you're talking about game design, especially an option like single player.

Doing that invites a future where resources are committed to tacking on a multi-player mode that might not fit the game in question.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

If they do go through with this then they have lost my support. Sorry but I like to play single player story modes. Unreal. :x
I am addicted to video games, especially retro gaming from my era. I have: NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, Gamecube, Gameboy, GBA, Wii, Sega Genesis, Sega CD, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, Xbox, and Xbox 360. I have probably over 1,000 games in total for all these systems combined. Yes, I need help and I wouldn't have it any other way! This is my passion and hey my wife still loves me!!

Since when is Deathmatch more important than a good storyline-based campaign?

Sounds like greed to me. Because if someone plays strictly offline, single-player modes then Valve can't see any more profit from that.

Fuck them, their Steam service, and their Sony-loving asses.

Let's not get too worked up over this. Valve isn't saying all games will be deathmatch. The exact quote is "Portal 2 will probably be Valve's last game with an isolated single-player experience". The Left4Dead games didn't have an isolated single-player experience either. You could play them single-player with AI, but you never ran through the game alone and both the multiplayer and the single player campaigns were exactly the same. Valve has also been a multiplayer heavy company for a long time now. Counterstrike, Team Fortress, Day of Defeat, Half Life Deathmatch, Ricochet, and Left 4 Dead are all multiplayer games. The only games with pure single player campaigns that can't be played cooperatively are the Half Life and Portal games.

Isn't Unreal a multiplayer game mainly though?

If this is true, then I'm probably done with Valve. This doesn't bode well for HL2Ep3. Hopefully they farm it out to someone who still cares about a good single player experience.

Never played any of those multiplayer games, save Counterstrike. Still don't get what the big deal about Counterstrike was. No interest whatsoever in the others.

Yeah, but the singleplayer mode in Unreal is actually pretty good.

Lol, with the extreme 'My way or the highway' mentality everyone seems to have I am surprised any of you guys can find a game to play these days!
