Best PS3 Sports Games thread

Post by noiseredux »

I've started lengthy threads like this for GameCube and PS2 in the past. I like the idea of owning a single sport title on most of my consoles. But the catch is this: I'm often looking for interesting things that make a certain game standout. For instance, I have Madden 2005 Championship Edition because it also includes retro-versions of Maddens that basically emulate SNES and PS1 Madden using the updated roster. I have NHL 06 because it's great on its own but also includes NHL 94 as well.

So in short I'm looking for recommendations of specific releases (not just a series) and WHY. What makes that particular game good? Oh and pictures are very helpful! :)

Baseball, Basketball, Football, Golf, Hockey, Soccer, Tennis, Volleyball. And "Other"?

My pick for basketball is a no-brainer. Not only because I collect games with Celtics on the covers. :)

When NBA 2K9 was released I played it at a kiosk in Toys R Us. I remember a guy came up behind me and said "I didn't know the Celtics were playing toda----" and then realized it was a video game. Playing the game, I had the same sort of thought. It felt like I was controlling a real game. Everything looked so authentic. Of course I got the PS2 version instead as I didn't own a PS3. But that was one of the first PS3 games that made me think "I should get a PS3 someday."

Um I played a FIFA game in Best Buy the other day and it was pretty sweet. I assume it was the latest.

EDIT: Forgot the 'why' part. Controls seemed really tight and the graphics were great.

Don't play sport games but I particularly liked Skate and Skate 2. Never played Skate 3.

I'm interested in the Madden 2005 Collector's Edition - what games does it emulate, and are all the rosters updated?

I just can't get into Baseball games today - they're way too complicated for me (RBI Baseball FTW,) but I like The Bigs because it's more arcade-like. Not very complicated, nice graphics, and the gameplay is easy to pickup and play.

Virtual Tennis will always hold a special place in my heart - it was so fluid and addicting. I'd imagine the newer games are the same! Top Spin is pretty solid as well.
I was also impressed with Rockstar's Table Tennis - pretty different, but still had that same vibe that Virtua Tennis had on the DC.

Tiger is the hands down king of golf games right now. Tiger 09 I think is considered the best so far, and I'd personally backup that claim. The gameplay is streamlined very nicely and the greens in Tiger games are so amazingly beautiful! Not a hard learning curve either, which makes pick up and play sessions after long absences very easy! From what I've read about this year's The Masters, it's pretty close to being the best Tiger game - I'll have to try that out soon!

For boxing - Fight Night Round 4. It lacks the (painfully short) story mode of Fight Night Champion, but there's still a good amount of hours to be put into it regardless, and the roster is slightly bigger than Round 3's.. Also, the Total Punch Control - it's so awesome! It might take some getting used to, but after three or four hours, you'll feel so at home with it, bobbing, weaving, jabbing and counter-hooking without even thinking about it. I feel like the newer 'Champion' gimped this terribly and EA really killed the experience for me with the DLC Legends (only way to play as Rocky Marciano, or Jack Dempsey is by buying them - LAME!) Go with Round 4 - you'll LOVE IT!!

I don't know if you like wrestling, but the Raw vs Smackdown games are pretty solid too. Take you're pick amongst any of them, because every year they add something and take away something, so it's really just luck of the draw. I'd recommend 2009 as the storylines within the game are old enough to be nostalgic (Flair's Legacy stable vs DX!,) and the amount of content is the nicest so far, IMHO. But if you're looking for something a little less simulation-driven, GO GET WWE All-Stars!! It's NBA JAM for wrestling, and it reminds me of the old WCW/NWO Revenge games on N64..

MMA - uhh, UFC Undisputed. 2010 or 2011, they're both pretty much the same. Haven't played MMA Supremacy, but I've heard from friends it's just 'meh'; not to mention there probably won't be any more made, given the recent acquisition of Strikeforce by UFC.

I'm willing to bet it'll be shockingly similar to Madden every other Madden you've played.

Supposedly The Show (whatever the latest one is) and Pro Yakyuu Spirits 6 are some of the best baseball games out there right now.
