But that's one successful 'Sonic and his Friends' title out of how many abject failures?

Sonic and his classic self is all we need playable for this game. Knuckles, Tails, and (maybe) Amy is all we need in the back ground.
I actually think that the cast of (obscure as this is) Sonic Drift 2 is pretty much perfect:

Sonic
Tails
Knuckles
Dr. Robotnik
Metal Sonic
Fang
Amy Rose

You have the inseparable Sonic & Tails, and of course the indispensable Dr. Robotnik. Knuckles, who at this point is completely established as being on the Sonic side, but susceptible as always to being tricked by Dr. Robotnik. Metal Sonic, who makes the perfect rival/nemesis to Sonic (the whole Shadow thing was always just too arbitrary, with his allegiances contingent on things that were always far too complex for me to ever care about -- Metal Sonic is so much more simple and effective). Fang, who's a neat little wild card in that he's entirely in it for the money/spoils and isn't a travesty of hentai-encouraging character design like his modern equivalent Rouge -- he makes for a great comedic character who can actually be a real part of the action instead of just distracting from it. And then Amy Rose who makes a great "damsel in distress," but can still fuck things up from the inside-out so with her hammer (like in Sonic Adventure) so as not to be offensively submissive to players who are more sensitive about gender roles.

You could add other characters, but they really just aren't necessary... I mean, I happen to think that Vector and Espio have really awesome character designs and all, but I think the whole series would be better if the team found a compromise where they didn't have to completely relegate the Sonic games to just having two characters like the fans seem to be asking for, but could have a small cast of characters to work with and really make fans care about them.

I've actually heard a lot of people say that, so I might have to give that one a shot someday. Most I've talked to even like it way more than Sonic 4... which was so forgettable, man how could they mess up the "physics" and controls of a Sonic game that badly? :x

I hear both these things as well (that Sonic Colors is awesome and Sonic 4 disappoints), what's so good about Sonic Colors, and is Sonic 4 not even worth trying?

I like both, to be honest. A lot of people were disappointed that the Sonic 4 engine is a little loose in some areas but I did not notice it. Sonic Colors is just good, simple fun. The wii version in particular has visuals that will blow you away.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

There's demo's up for Sonic 4 which should give you a fair enough taste of it. For me, they ruined the physics/mechanics of the game. As silly as that sounds, you just have to play it to see what I mean. When you stop running and let go of the controls even on a slope or something, Sonic instantly stops. Same if you're jumping forward really fast, if you let go he just stops and falls straight down. In the old games hills and long jumps still had momentum, so it felt right and wasn't clunky.

ie: Yeah just play the demo to see what I mean, lol. The controls were just way too awkward for me, no idea how they funked something like that up.

Wow. This is exactly the kind of Sonic game the fans have wanted. Good job Sega. This looks incredible.

Sometimes I wonder how many times Sonic fans will want to play Green Hill Zone.

I'm not really much of a Sonic fan. I have played quite a few of the games though. My first thought at seeing this trailer was "**** the Green Hill Zone again?" Glad somebody else was thinking that.

I shat bricks. Damn this looks awesome.

Notice how classic Sonic is a lot quieter though? I like that, lol.
