I need help getting Fallout to work.

Post by MrEco »

I've been trying all day yesterday and today trying to get Fallout to work. I have no idea what the problem is. I started this thread but it didn't seem to get any attention and I need help. The last four times in a row I can't get out of the cave in the beginning because it froze and crashed my computer. One time was when I tried to save my game, one was when I tried exiting the save menu after having saved the game, and twice it froze while I tried to start combat against the rats. Also, every like third action makes the whole screen go black and my mouse acts like a sponge which clears the black if I move my mouse over it. I have the GSP White Label version which might be for XP though I could be easily mistaken. That combined with the fact that I have Windows 7 on the laptop that I'm using might explain why I'm having problems but I really don't know. I know nothing about computers and most of the patches I've found whether "official" or not seem to require manual installation which I have no hope of figuring out how to do. I was able to find a patch for Fallout 2 that automatically installed itself so I assume it worked but I haven't tried to play Fallout 2 yet and have no idea.

Please, I'm desperate for help.

I hate to say it but I had a lot of trouble with the White Label collection myself, I straight up could not get Fallout 2 to install (Win7 64bit here). However I bought 1-2 off GoG and after some tinkering around, got them working perfectly fine.

You might want to consider skimming their forums about stuff:

First of all, don't panic, Fallout is well-known for being a buggy game, hence those patches greatly help.

However running such an old game on a modern computer doesn't look to hot to me. I don't trust decent support when the release was meant to cash in the success of the sequel so perhaps using Dos Box will help.

Well like I mentioned above I have both 1-2 running just fine on Win7 64bit, it did take a little configuring here and there, but they look and run pretty amazing especially with the higher resolutions.

I almost think sometimes beyond OS's, widescreen monitors themselves are a bigger issue with some old games, like Longest Journey. I'd love to play it, but it'd have to be in a tiny window to look proportionally correct and all. I'll just have to wait someday until I setup and older system or something for that one.

You can always check GOG's versions if everything else fails.

Is giving up the same thing as panicking? Because I'm about to do that. I tried Fallout 2 which I previously said I had been able to download the Killap patch for and it was even worse. The first time I got to the main menu and the game crashed. The second time it just started up the actual gameplay before freezing. I searched all through the link that Xeogred gave and wasn't able to find anything that worked. I've tried every patch I've come across that looked like it might help and every one has either not been able to download or didn't do a damn thing.
The only other thing I can think of is to try DOSbox. But there's two problems with that. Firstly, where the hell do I find a good place to get DOSbox? Secondly, how the hell do I use DOSbox? Also is there some kind of XPbox?

Also, I have one slightly unrelated question. Are all older PC games this much trouble? I was considering buying an actual gaming PC. Nothing fancy really because I was mostly looking to play games released around like 1990 to 2005. But for that very reason if its gonna be just as hectic for most other games as it is being for Fallout then that idea can go fuck itself right out the window.

Have you tried running the game in compatibility mode for windows xp? or 2000? If not try running it that way. Since I do not have windows 7 I am just guessing but righc click on .exe Then look for options to run in compatibility mode and admin too.

First off MrEco, chill! lol... but I understand how frustrating these things can be as I run into plenty of issues myself trying to run old games sometimes. That said I must echo again that the White Label Collection didn't work correctly for me either and I've heard others have issues with it too, sorry to say you may have wasted your money on it as I did, since the GoG versions work just fine for me.

DOSbox works on XP/7 and all, but I'll leave it up to others to help you there since I'm still a novice with it myself. I'm not sure why you'd need it for Fallout, but perhaps that'd work, I've used it for really old games like Ultima Underworld, etc.

Anyways, that's just how it's gonna be from here on. Getting older games to run on modern systems can be a real pain in the ass sometimes, especially stuff from ~2000 sometime (whereas DOSbox can save you with much older titles, it can't always here), like Thief 1-2 I can't get working on my PC for the life of me. It really is just kind of hit or miss.

If you have the money and all it probably isn't too far fetched to just consider building an older machine with 95/98 or so if you're really wanting to get into a lot of old PC games, something I'll probably do eventually myself.

After a quick Google search to find out what you were talking about when you said "compatibility mode" I tested it and it didn't work. Then I tried DOSbox. Failure.

Oh and yeah its nice to see that it looks as if the Thief games won't work for me either if I ever do buy a gaming PC.

This is such a headache. Looks like the only hope I have is to try the GoG versions. Which means more money and as I've seen from the GoG forums not even that's guaranteed to work. :x
