Vinyl made a come back because of in an age of digital music it appealed to people looking for a warm quality sound for their home collections. Tapes are making a comeback because indie kids are bored

I was wondering if Cassette tapes would come back. Now let's hope that LaserDisc comes back. :D

I actually preferred cassettes over CDs whenever I was driving in a car (preferred CDs at home) back before the big MP3 boom because of the fragility of CDs. I could just chuck tapes around my car and step on them and it was usually all good.

Another reason Vinyl's are still been made is because a lot of DJ's still prefer them.

Ah the memories. I used to record my LPs on cassette tape. It was great to have all the favorite songs on an easy to transport over to the car deck. Even tried the "Metal" tapes with Dolby and what was it called CRO2 Oxide button or something? Without the "metal oxide" button turned on, the tapes would have a too high tinny sound. Dolby on the other hand would get rid of a lot of the hiss, but at the loss of all the high treble tones. I do still copy my LPs and even some Laser Disc Music Videos, but now as CDs and MP3s. The hissy no fun search and rewind cassette tape was good in its day, no longer viable.

That was the point, the chromium type II tapes (as opposed to regular iron type I) used a different equalization so it could record a stronger signal of sorts, which then required that to be taken into account when playing back. A real deck knew it was a chrome tape by the notches next to the protect tab. There are also metal type IV tapes which are different again, and have notches near the middle top of the tape. Portable and cheaper car decks didn't sense for the holes and you had to instead had to manually push a button. If a properly recorded II or IV tape is played in a deck as a regular I tape, it will sound distorted just like one recorded with the older Dolby NR that is played back improperly.

I've only bought one cassette tape since I've switched to CDs, and I only bought it because it had the theme songs for 2001: A Space Odyssey, Star Wars and various other old science fiction movies.
