Is the Orange Box (PAL) for PS3 Region Free?

Post by Satoshi_Matrix »

Hey guys, I'd like to buy the Orange Box for my PS3 and notice that the going rate for the European version is about half what the North American one is.

I'm Canadian, and wondering if I could import say the UK version of The Orange Box and expect it to run without any problems on my PS3 and NTSC only televisions.

I know the PS3 is supposedly region free for nearly all games, but I just want to make sure I'm not going to end up buying something I can't play. Thanks.

I thought PS3 was region-free for ALL games.

Untrue. There are some region exclusives and some that apparently don't run correctly in one format or another. I'd like to know where the Orange Box falls.

any examples? I've never heard of this. I thought that since the BIOS doesn't do a region check before booting a PS3 game there would be no way to region-code the game?

Regardless of whether PAL Orange Box will work with a US system at all (which it should), I've heard that regardless of region certain games still access the original country's servers for online play? Had a friend in England who wanted me to grab him a copy of Killzone 2 (long story...) but he backed out because he heard that there would be lag when playing online if he used a US copy.
May not even be an issue at all, but I figured with Team Fortress 2 being such a big part of Orange Box it would be good to get this figured out...

Same thing happens with Demon's Souls. Orange Box is region free. The PS3 isn't region free, however publishers can choose whether they want to region lock their titles, most don't. Same thing happens on the 360 however for some reason most publishers choose to region lock their titles on that platform. My Asian copy of Halo Reach works fine on my PAL 360 for example.

I have the Orange Box on PS3 which I bought in HK but play in Australia, no problems. On the region code symbol on the back it says '2', but all my other games in which I bought in Australia have '4' in the symbol. They all work on my fine on my Australian PS3.
