I have an Xbox which I basically gave to my girlfriend (since I have another one), but her sister tripped over it, and not the HDD is making clicking sounds and won't load. I get the "This XBOX needs service" screen, but I dont get an error code.
Is there something I can do to fix this, or install a new HDD?
Xbox HDD
You could install a new hard drive (if this is the probelm), but you need a copy of the eeprom key, if you don't have this you are out of luck, as you need to get it from the xbox when it is working.
Have you tried opening it up, disconnecting the wires and re attaching them, it might work.
Otherwise I am afraid it might be dead.
could it be the cd lens clicking? check if that is loose or something is blocking it

Was the hard drive switched on when it was knocked?
If it was then you probably have a head crash on the hard drive. It's unrepairable unfortunately. I'd try opening it. (you need a torx screwdriver). take the hard drive out and boot. if the click has gone then hard drive is shafted and will need replacing. unofortunately you need to lock the hard drive with the correct encryption key... which is on the hard drive that is broken. unless you've modded and have a backup you're boned. You will need a new xbox.

I also rent and sell PS2, Wii and XBOX softmod-kits and I collect DVD movies let me know what you have.
her little sister isnt telling me anything... only that she tripped over it. maybe cause she thinks ill hang her or something.
but im guessing it the hdd, because ive had damaged hdds on a pc that sounded the same way.
and its not modded so i dont have a backup.
so there is no way of fixing it? even with modding?

Either way it's gonna be a lot of hassle. Hotswapping isn't impossible but it's bloody hard! You also need access to a PC that you can boot with case off so that you can lock/unlock the drives as you swap. But that only works with the proper encryption key for the lock which is based off your motherboard. The security that Microsoft implemented in the xbox made it so that each xbox's hard drive was unique to that xbox in that it had an encryption key that unlocked/locked the hard drive on startup/shutdown. Seeing as your xbox isn't modded it's just made the matter of swapping the harddrives extremely difficult.
Using a modchip it's slightly easier but you won't be able to use the original xbox dashboard anymore because the dashboard needs the drive to be locked on startup otherwise it throws a kernel error at you and won't let you progress further.

Given how much a new hard drive and mod chip plus the gear to fit if you've never done it before it might just be easier to buy a new xbox!

fyi, you can auto unlock the drive by booting the core up with the dvd rom's ide unplugged.devilmyarse wrote:Either way it's gonna be a lot of hassle. I was not aware of that! Shows how long i've been out of the xbox modding scene.
But it doesn't explain how he's gonna get the hard drive to lock properly without a mod
So either way he's gotta mod to fix it.
I say it's not worth it. Xbox's are cheap as chips these days.
