Super Nintendo controller problem

My Super Nintendo (that I just bought) is not recognizing the start button being pressed anymore. I tried different controllers, but it's still doing it. Any ideas?

It's possible there is a connection problem with the socket. Does the same controller work on the 2nd player port???

It doesn't work for either port.

And while we're on the subject of SNES problems, I bought an s-video cable from this site but there is one big vertical line in the center of the screen. It's only noticeable when the screen is black or a dark shade, but it's pretty big...it's like one big line of blurriness or something. Hard to describe, but it's annoying.

Maybe I got a bad cable, or is it the SNES again?

Sounds like a dodgy snes to me! Do you get the same problem with multiple controllers in both sockets? if it occurs in both sockets then there's definately a problem with the motherboard.

Weird, it works now for the first player port...second one is still not working.

It might be that both controllers are faulty. When I first got my SNES, both controllers had faulty 'Start' and 'Select' buttons. The problem was simply dirty contacts. I opened up the controllers and cleaned off the contacts, and when I put the, back together they worked fine.

What'd you use to clean the contacts?

What'd you use to clean the contacts?

I just wiped them with a rag and they were ok. If they still didn't work, I'd have used some rubbing alcohol to clean it, then wiped it dry.
