I've talked a bit about some of the bands I like in the Metal thread, but for older thrash, I enjoy Nuclear Assault, Venom, Annihilator, Tankard, Destruction, and the 80s work of Metallica, particularly And Justice for All and Ride the Lightning. There's a few songs by Slayer and Anthrax I enjoy, but I've never taken the time to explore their work as much as I should.Xeogred wrote:Dude, nice. I've enjoyed what I've heard from bands like Sodom and Kreator, though they're both hit or miss with me.
As for what I'm listening to right now, Witchfinder General - Witchfinder General

Haha, great stuff dude. I've never gotten too into the big Bay Area bands to be honest, not a huge fan of Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, or whatnot, maybe crazy of me but I like the faster, dirtier, or darker stuff usually. Some that come to mind... Artillery, Coroner, Deathrow, Destructor, Flots & Jets, Holy Terror, Overkill (their debut), early Metal Church, Onslaught, Pariah, Rigor Mortis, Satan (their second album), Torture, Toxik, Vendetta... haha just some random ones.
Tankard and Venom are definitely awesome in my book. I even don't mind late 80's / early 90's Venom, which seems kind of hit or miss to some people.
Gotta agree with you about Sodom and Kreator, Kreator especially ... not sure if I like them that much, but some of Sodom is pretty cool. Same with Destruction.
You a fan of Heathen? Huge fan myself, the one Bay Area-ish thrash band I actually like a lot and I thought their newest album kicked tons of ass. A comeback done well.
Guess I'll listen to that now... so here!

I've been listening to a lot of grunge today. Alice in Chains in particular. I've been thinking about how sad Layne Staley's death was. It's been 9 years now since he died back in April, 2002. He had so much talent and is one of those rare voices that you just instantly recognize out of the throngs of samey-samey vocalists. He stood out even after so many copy-cat musicians tried to immitate him. It's heart breaking that he lost popularity, lost friends, fell deeper into heroin and cocaine addiction, and ultimately died alone in his apartment, his body withered down to 80 lbs, propped up in front of his television, and nobody even realizing or caring he was gone. It took over two weeks for anyone to realize he had died. He was an amazing musician and his end was tragic.
Right now I am listening to the song that Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam wrote for Layne on the day he found out of his death: 4 20 02
And here's the Layne Staley video that got me started on this

check out Agony's "The First Defiance." underrated and virtually unknown swedish thrash.Ack wrote:I've talked a bit about some of the bands I like in the Metal thread, but for older thrash, I enjoy Nuclear Assault, Venom, Annihilator, Tankard, Destruction, and the 80s work of Metallica, particularly And Justice for All and Ride the Lightning. (these youtube videos are great because the singer leaves detailed comments on all of them about the recording of the record and his time in the band. really interesting.)
layne staley is my favorite vocalist from this era. such a talented, amazing musician. i was so upset when i saw that AIC was active again without him. the thing that infuriated me the most was seeing jerry cantrell and the new vocalist doing an acoustic version of "brother." that song, to me, is the essence of layne staley. it's probably the saddest song i've ever heard in my life. the lyrics basically just say "i am a heroin addict and it really fucking sucks" in a very eloquent, beautifully tragic way. to hear someone else sing this song under the AIC name is kind of disrespectful, i feel, because man, if you wanna sing "man in the box," then cool, but don't pose on the H front.J T wrote:I've been listening to a lot of grunge today. Yeah, like 10-20 times a day for me. I get chills whenever I get to that stage now and it's become one of those "I don't want to move on" so it never stops playing.Gamerforlife wrote:Jesus that track is an earworm. Gecko Yamori is just too damn awesome.
One of my other favorites is New Wave:
