A PS2 save-data question.

I'm playing Silent Hill 4 and every time I try to enter one area the game freezes at the loading screen. I have tried cleaning the disc already but it's in really, really bad shape. I cannot skip this area I'm trying to load so I'm going to have to buy a new disc.

My main question is that if I buy a new disc will it require me to make a new save file or will I be able to continue from where I left off? (I think I'd be fine with another disc but I want to double-check.)

I cleaned it about 3 more times and got it to work long enough to beat the game. I still need to go pick up another copy for future playing.
