What was the last movie you've seen?

Yeah, so I haven't responded to this thread in a while again. I don't know, I just like clumps I suppose.

Sucker Punch - Yes, it was dumb at times, but I still enjoyed it for what it was: a visual splendor and the female equivalent of 300 (no, really, it's a pseudo-companion piece).

Kind of a double standard isn't it? 300 got good reviews and Sucker Punch didn't? I liked 300, but like you implied it really had no substance. I think sometimes that 300 simply managed to ride on the success of Sin City, which actually did have SOME substance.

Now people are sort of burnt out on the whole comic book visual thing I think. Sin City, 300, The Spirit. I think Sucker Punch just got to the party a bit late

Yes, both Heavy Metal and that episode of South Park rocked! I'm actually one of the few that seem to enjoy Heavy Metal 2000 as well.

Actually I think we're tried of comic book movies in general. They've been coming out regularly for the last decade from Marvel and DC, and while we've gotten some great films, once this current crop is over, I'm hoping we see the trend subside for a little while. It's great that we've reached a point that we can do these kinds of things with film, but I'm looking forward to the next step...or perhaps I should say I'm looking back, because I've spent the last few years exploring the numerous older films I should have seen (and I have many more to watch).

Frankly having so many comic book movies in so little time has really killed a lot of the magic for me. Yes, I will see Captain America, Thor, etc., but once we get the Avengers, I'm holding off. Because when you get down to it, I'm getting tired of these kinds of visuals. I watched 300 when it came out in theaters and loved it. I saw it several months later on DVD and realized that once you get beyond appearances, the film felt rather limited. I want more substance than flash in my movies again. And it's not that action films are this way; I'll eagerly go back and watch films like Total Recall, Commando, or Demolition Man, and these are all extremely cheesy. But there's a charm to them that I'm not finding in these modern visual splendors.

I think Avengers will actually be a breath of fresh air in the genre. Joss Whedon is not really known for being conventional. So I don't see Avengers following the same mold as other comic book movies. With that in mind, it's kind of a shock that he got this job. Also, Joss is very good at character work, which seems to be what a lot of these visually obsessed comic book movies are lacking.

Well I'm a complete comic book geek and have been for my ENTIRE life. So I'm happy with all the comic movies I can get. I remember a time when comic movies looked like this:



Be thankful it's not like that anymore. I remember it and as a result I'm quite happy with comic movies today, even Daredevil and Fantastic Four.

Yeah - I'm a pretty big comic book fan, and Captain America is even my favorite Marvel character (and I think Green Lantern is pretty boss too), but I just have absolutely no interest in Captain America, Green Lantern or any more of these super hero movies. I think i stopped caring after X3 - that movie felt just as hollow an experience as the Star Wars Prequels.

I'm really not anticipating The Avengers. Doing a movie based on a team usually falls flat on it's face unless you have a definite focus - but since all the characters in The Avengers are such larger-than-life icons, it means either:
A) You have to have watched ALL the previous Marvel films to understand each of the characters, alienating more than a good chunk of the viewers who missed at least a few movies.
OR
B) Each of the characters will have to be developed within the movie, not leaving much room for anything else - and hell, likely not even fleshing out each of the characters before the 3 hour mark.
Comic book fans might be pleased, but remember what happened last time a movie was made to specifically please comic book fans? It was Game Over for Scott Pilgrim.

Still, if they made a new Batman, I'd probably see that.

So have I. I remember watching the Dolph Lundgren Punisher film and thinking it was the coolest thing ever, or the Incredible Hulk series and TV movies with Lou Ferrigno.

As for modern comic films, one of my favorites is Road to Perdition. But that film wasn't just about visual flair. I don't mind a film not having all of the nifty special effects if it presents a solid story, well done music, and interesting cinematography instead of focusing on pure eye candy and churning out as many films as possible purely for the sake of making a few bucks off of merchandising.

I think that bugs me the most. Sure, Marvel and DC have always done whatever they could to make some money off of their properties, through legions of action figures, trading cards, cartoons, video games (some of which have failed utterly), etc. I think films take a bit more care to craft, but I'm seeing the likes of Elektra or Spider-Man 3. There are good comic book films...Hell, there are great comic book films. But I'm getting sick of them after the glut I've seen, and many of them made me shake my head and wonder.

It's getting to be like cheesy B-grade scifi in the '50s. Shoot, think of it like eating too much candy: you love it at first but after awhile you wanna kill yourself for gorging, and you realize that some of it really tasted like crap.
