The way I see it, Valve will be making the same ammount of money, if not more due to the higher price tag (not sure how much EA takes from each sold), off each new sale on the PS3. So no loses there. Additionally, anyone who does not have a Steam account, wether they buy the game used or new, has to make one to play co-op / download the PC version. This is the end is probably going to be much more profitable to them as it will create a butt-load of potential customers on Steam. And of course Steam itself is much more profitable then any game Valve makes.

Pretty much this. Valve make their money as soon as the game ships to the store. They don't get anything from people physically buying the game, that's all profit for the store. The only people you are hurting are the video game store, but as long as it's somebody like Game/Gamestop you shouldn't lose sleep over it. Don't do it to the little man with the indie game shop though. That's not nice.

How long will the free Steam copy go on for? I don't have the money to spare to get the game around release, so I'll be buying it brand new in the later months, but I'm worried they'll stop giving out Steam codes.

Timer ends at noon EST today.

Knowing Valve, there's going to be a bombshell then...

As far as we know until they stop manufactoring the game. Valve have said its part of the steamplay mantra of 'buy once, play anywhere' so its likely not a time senstitive thing.

Sweet, that makes sense, thanks. and another question since I'm not familiar with how Steam works, but lets say I save the code to activate at a later time, is there a chance it'll become unusable?

If you play the games on this list enough to get enough "CPUs", Valve will release the PC version early.

Valve sure know how to make money. Hey, buy the potato pack and play the crap out of 'em to launch Portal 2 ahead of the release date so you can buy it...faster

Im not 100% sure on this, but I do not believe so. None of the other Steam products I've registered with a code ever had expiry dates anyways.

Awesome, I'll be sure the buy the game brand new no matter what.

And dammit, I wish I had enough money to make having a Steam account worthwhile. I would definitely help with the games on that list, just to help out PC users.
