That's why you usually see smaller sized games available for download.
True, but I think he meant releases aren't going to be 100% complete on physical media (like many releases now), and he's more than likely going to be right.

I hope not. Nintendo hasn't done much DLC so far so hopefully they stick to what they've been doing.

The only Nintendo DLC I can think of is a few extra songs for Samba de Amigo on the Wii.

Right when those investments will be starting to pay off for them, they will be overshadowed by Nintendo's new console and be forced to spend more time and money on releasing their own next-gen consoles.
In terms of profit Nintendo has definitely been leading this generation. But in terms of hardware Sony and Microsoft have them undoubtedly beat. Nintendo's newest console is going to be caching up to what the PS3 and 360 have already been doing for the last 5-6 years. If Sony or Microsoft decide to release a new console of their own they will almost certainly end up trumping Nintendo once again. Hell, even in the slim chance that Nintendo comes out with a console that skips past the 360 and PS3 in terms of capability and makes some super machine the PS4 and "Xbox-3" will still be on even footing with it once they release. Fuck it, if Nintendo is somehow able to magically skip ahead a full generation in terms of technology who's to say that Sony and Microsoft (Who are currently far more technologically advanced already) won't do the same?

Basically you got three scenarios that are possible.
1) The Wii-2 comes out with the technological capabilities of a 7th generation device despite being an 8th generation console. Sony and Microsoft come in and release consoles that are actually 8th generation powerful. Once again Sony and Microsoft have the most powerful systems.
2) Nintendo skips ahead and makes an 8th generation console that performs like an 8th generation console. Sony and Microsoft don't skip ahead but still make 8th generation "proper" consoles. Everyone's on equal footing.
3) Nintendo skips ahead and makes an 8th generation "proper" console. Sony and Microsoft also skip ahead and make 8th generation consoles that look like 9th gen. Sony and Microsoft have the more powerful consoles.

tl;dr
It is physically impossible for Nintendo hardware to "overshadow" something built by Sony and Microsoft.

Untrue. One of the biggest problems facing Sony and Microsoft is that, given the principle of diminishing returns, the effort they have to produce to get to that next graphical hurdle is HUGE now. So huge that it would be impossible for them to introduce a new machine capable of providing a new visual experience without leapfrogging either the developers ability to produce material for the machine or their customers ability to pay for such material.

In this instance, Nintendo enjoys the same advantage that developing nations do compared to existing economic powerhouses: They don't have to try nearly so hard to cover more ground. All they have to do is what Microsoft and Sony have already done (which is 5 year old technology) and go a little further to put them ahead. Meanwhile the development hurdle facing Microsoft and Sony to get to that next plateau is going to dissuade them from doing so until they stand a chance to make some money doing it. You'd better bet your ass that Sony isn't going to try their 'sell at a loss' strategy again so soon. They'll need their new consoles to pay for themselves out of the box.

Nintendo basically has gotten a freebie with the Wii. They got to sit back, collect money, and watch their competitors do the work for them.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Oh, what I am saying. Of course hardware specs are the only thing that matters in the video game industry. That's exactly why Nintendo went out of business when they released the Wii, which was just Gamecube hardware with a different shell. What's that, you say? Controllers? Who cares about the controller? It's the horsepower inside the machine that matters. Oh, what's that? Games? Lol, who cares about games. People don't buy these things to play games. They buy them because they can do awesome graphics. >_>

I had some fun with this post. Thanks for the laugh.

And as many past console cycles have taught us, being "a little further" in terms of power does not mean your system is going to do better (Or "overshadow" the competition). Its only if a specific console has a major leap in ability over its competitors that hardware becomes a major consideration for the consumer.

You yourself specifically called out hardware power in the section that I quoted you on in my first post. I wasn't talking about the over all success of the consoles. I was talking specifically about the hardware capabilities. Just. Like. You.

But if you wanna go ahead and make incorrect assumptions in an attempt to make me look stupid then go on. You're only digging your own grave.

I like how everyone's getting butthurt over something that hasn't even been announced yet.

Lol, and as Nintendo has taught us having the most powerful hardware also doesn't matter.

Consumers fucking LOVE buying new things. You think each Iphone is a MAJOR leap over the last? And yet people get in line. People do the same thing for console revisions. Sorry dude but your logic just doesn't fit with reality.

brunoafh wrote:I told myself that this gen was the last one I would support. I plan to stick to that too, so it's weird to finally see the beginning of the new consoles I won't be owning.
You know what, this might be the same case for me too. Growing up time after time again I always loved being caught up with the latest consoles and all which was typically worth it. But honestly, it's hilarious when I talk to some people online who are still just stuck on the PS2 era or I even know a guy who still just mainly plays PSX and older games... and it's like, all I can really say is "Well you aren't missing much".

I'll be gaming for life, it's as simple as that. But there's been so many disappointments for me this generation and I'm just not that happy at all with the state of gaming and the main community out there for it. I don't want to sound cliche' at all or anything, but it really is like "it's gone too mainstream".

So anyways, now that I've been dirt poor for the last several months unable to buy or even rent new games, it didn't take long for me to discover... wow, it really doesn't bother me. Gaming isn't a race and maybe I treated it as such for a long time up till now, but I've been having a blast these past few months replaying old favorites, checking out other old games I missed out on via emulation or hitting up that backlog, or buying dirt cheap gems... lol. Despite the rant above there's still plenty of 360/PS3 titles I want to get too and new ones I'm looking forward too, but I can wait, and that's all the more reason why I don't think it'd be that hard to not pickup a next gen system right away. Just relax, play all the old stuff you want, and by the time you get to some new titles they'll probably be dirt cheap.

Maybe I'm lying and I'll buy the MS 1080, Super Wii 2056, or the PS4 when they're brand new when the time comes... who knows. But it's been pretty fun being a lot more relaxed about gaming for awhile now and I think I'll stick with it. There's still so many PSX/PS2 titles I need to play it's not even funny! Sure that as well is a bit overwhelming, but man it's a lot more satisfying and adventurous to do research and look out for good old stuff rather than keeping up with the hyped up news about tons of bullshit franchises and games coming out today.

No money taught me patience, and well if I don't have a next gen console next time around for awhile maybe I won't be so damn cranky because it won't matter to me. Haha.

And that's that for my pointless diary of the day.
