Any Evangelion fans here? I have some questions

Post by indecks »

I watched Evangelion back when it was on DVD, the regular 24 or 26 episode series, that ended with the weird little 'clip show' or whatever. This was like nearly 8 years ago, I think. Since then, there was End of Evangelion, I think, which I'm not sure I watched.

My question is this: What are the new movies that are coming out? I've heard of Evangelion 1.0, 1.11, 2.0 and 2.22? What are these?

I'm not trying to spark a discussion of their merit, how good or terrible they are, I'm just trying to figure out what they are so I can either rent them if they are on netflix, or just download them if necessary.

Are there currently 4 'episodes?'

1.0
1.11
2.0
2.22

edit: I also found something called Behemoth Evangelion?? jeez!

I've only seen 1.0 or whatever - but basically they follow the plot of the original series.

They're sort of like movies that encompass a cluster of episodes. I think the 1.0 is like the first 4 or 5 maybe....and so on.

Besides cleaner animation I think they made the story a bit easier to understand. There were some minute differences when I watched it - but I haven't seem them all.

I haven't heard of behemoth evangelion.

The Evangelion movies are like Street Fighter, they're the basically equal, feature slight differences, and there's always the definitive one you should get.

There are three "versions" of the first movie, 1.0, 1.01 and 1.11. 1.0 was the first theatrical release, 1.01 is the second version with some tweaks that went to DVD and Blu-ray, and 1.11 is the second DVD/Blu-ray release, with additional scenes (like 3 minutes) and further revisions.

The second movie had version 2.0 and 2.22. 2.0 was the first theatrical release, and 2.22 is the version we got on DVD and Blu-ray, with revisions.

So, you only need to watch 1.11 and 2.22.

These movies intend to update the animation and make the story a little more straightforward. IMO, the story needed some major revisions, but the animation was just fine.

If you want to get into the story of Evangelion, I'd suggest you read the manga. It's much more linear and followable than the anime. Unfortunately, it's still running, since Yoshiyuki Sadamoto draws like a chapter every two years.

The 1.11 and 2.22 are essentially the same thing as 1.0 and 2.0. There's only 2 rebuild films out. Both are excellent.

I've never gotten into this series, but I always thought the EVA units were really cool in the SRT games.

I wouldn't say the new Rebuild movies are straight up remakes of the TV show. The first movie (1.11) is essentially a remake of the first few episodes, but in the second one (2.22) they kinda mish mash a few but its essentially the starting point of ANOTHER version of the Evangelion story. And I must say that the new animation is fabulous and def worth seeing on the biggest screen possible.

I don't know how many people here read fanfiction, but there's a fanfiction floating around called "Shinji and Warhammer 40k" where Shinji turns into the "God-Emperor" or something along those lines all because he finds some Warhammer toys in his childhood.
To say that it's much better than it sounds is an understatement.

Information on it is here: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/F ... rhammer40K

Be warned: if you're interested in reading it, make sure you have lots of free time on your hands, because the prologue alone clocks in at 54 pages in Word-format.

Oh wow! I didn't even know that. In that case I have seen 1.11 not 1.0. The previews I saw for 2.22 looked kind of interesting - like they actually introduced more EVA's or something. I've been waiting for it to come ON Demand, but I should try Netflix probably.

Jeez. Looks like a serious case of GeorgeLucas-itis. Well i was able to find some 720p rips of 1.11 and 2.22. I guess I'll check them out later. Thanks for the info.

I wouldn't say it's George Lucas-itis...i mean...the Rebuild movies didn't really shit on our childhoods. If it was GeorgeLucas-itis, Anno would have to get rid of the old TV show and digitally add in a few scenes of Gendo giving Shinji a hug so he seems like less of a jerk.

I'd say its more RipleyScott-itis, what with the like 5 versions of Blade Runner and all
