Aren't you only just 18?
I was started on the computer early, and with DOS. My dad set me up with a computer and a few games, with the ways to get to them written on a sticky note.
Still, I wouldn't consider that as valuable experience. I figured out how to use BBS and download patches for my Amiga games when I was 9, I still wouldn't say that's 15 years worth of experience...

It is still experience though. You learn a lot just using a system, even if you aren't diving into the depths of it. Every little bit of experience counts for something. You always have to start somewhere.

I highly suggest a dosbox front end then - such as D-Fend reloaded:
http://dfendreloaded.sourceforge.net/
Its like Mame32/MameUI for Dos games.

Guide on how to install and use D-Fend:

This.

Screw fucking around with virtual machines. I definitely wouldn't recommend going CRT's route, it's overly convoluted and you don't have any guarantee that it's even going to work on your hardware. Windows 98 drivers aren't the greatest even with all the extra work the community has put into keeping it relevant. You're bound to find something that doesn't work right. Plus those old games just aren't going to like being run on a modern GPU without some sort of abstraction to keep them in check.

Just get DOSbox, spend an hour reading the documentation and getting your head round it and just setup a DOSbox front end customized to how you like it.

Trust me, that hour spent will be a lot less than the time you'd waste fucking around with Windows 98 or finding legacy components.

I think you'd be better off not buying any old computers to be honest. Look for some tutorials for DOSBox on line and just keep playing around with it. Regardless if you get a DOS, 95, or 98 machine, you'll still have to deal with lots of shit you probably don't care to deal with, and, why waste money on a machine you'll get frustrated with and just leave in a closet anyway?[/quote]

yea I've never been good with computers..lol.. i guess i could always just buy oddworld off steam

I'll try to figure out how to use virtual PC too.. I think it's gonna take me an entire day to figure it out i think

and sorry if i screwed up the quotes..

And also, how fast does my computer have to be to play 98 and 95 games on Virtual PC?

my computer is kinda like this:

Windows XP
960 MB of ram
2.41 GHz (but some times it changes to 1.80 GHz for some reason)
198 GB of free space..

Is that good enough?

Telling us the speed tells us nothing. What type of processor is it? Judging from the rest of your specs I'm guessing you don't have a modern intel/AMD processors so you won't have any virtualisation optimisations like the modern CPUs have. For Windows 98 it won't be much of a hassle but trust me. You're better off learning Dosbox. Virtualisation will only get you so far.

I'm talking about similar technologies to Intel's Virtualization Technology. It's basically optimised for programs like Virtual PC/Virtual Box etc. Just makes it faster.

You don't have a processor that has this. Virtualisation will be possible performance just isn't satisfactory. It's a single core, not very fast and you don't have much ram. Virtualisation is NOT the path you want to take. DOS box is neat and fast, you don't want to be running an operating system inside an operating system just to do something you can do in DOS box with a bit of reading.

Listen to Ryan. I've got a 486 DX2 machine (it still uses the old DIN keyboard) propping up a door and an AMD K6-2 that's currently a footrest.

If you do end up getting an old PC, may I suggest asking your local campus if they have one to give away? I have a state college that rips apart donated x86 machines for shop class, and sometimes they have extras.

(Actually, if you'd pay for the -- most likely hefty, considering size was a bragging point back then -- shipping you want one of my old PCs?)
My scheduling skills have died of dysentery; I hope to visit at least on a monthly basis.
Still, don't forget to tip your waitress.
